The 20th European Under-17 Football Championship was held in Denmark from April 27 to May 10, 2002 . The winner was Switzerland by a 4: 2 victory on penalties over France . Spain , winners of the last U-16 European Championship, finished fourth. Germany failed in the quarterfinals against France.
The new age limit of 17 years applied for the first time. The final round was played for the last time with 16 teams. The UEFA subsequently reduced the number of participants to eight teams.

The 16 qualified teams were divided into four groups of four teams each. Within the groups, each team played each other once. The group winners and runners-up reached the quarter-finals. From there on, the knockout system continued.
