Beatles for Sale ( English Beatles for sale ) is the fourth studio album by the British group The Beatles , which was released on December 4, 1964 in Great Britain. In Germany, the album was released on November 13, 1964, here it was their sixth album, including the compilation album. In the US , a modified version of the album was released on December 15, 1964 under the title Beatles '65 . The British version of Beatles for Sale was released on CD on July 21, 1987 in the USA .

Emergence

Beatles in Key West , Florida , September 10, 1964
John Lennon, 1964

Beatles for Sale was recorded around the time Beatlemania was peaking. The Beatles were busy touring, TV and radio appearances and therefore had little time to record their new album. Due to the time-consuming stress, the Beatles had not written enough songs in contrast to their previous album A Hard Day's Night to fill an entire album. With Beatles for Sale , the Beatles used six cover versions that they already had in their repertoire when they performed at the Cavern Club , so that they could record this new LP , which was planned for the Christmas business, in a relatively short time. This in turn meant that the Beatles recorded six songs on October 18, 1964 and completed two more.

Paul McCartney: “It didn't take us long to record Beatles for Sale . Basically that was our stage show with some new songs. "

Handwritten text of What You're Doing

For the third-party compositions, the Beatles opted for two Carl Perkins titles Honey Don't and Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby , a song by Buddy Holly : Words of Love , one by Chuck Berry : Rock and Roll Music , the Kansas City medley / Hey Hey Hey Hey composed by Leiber / Stoller and Richard Penniman , and for Mr. Moonlight by Roy Lee Johnson. The recording Leave My Kitten Alone , composed by Little Willie John, Titus Turner and James McDougal, was not used for the album and did not appear on the album Anthology 1 until November 1995 .

Beatles for Sale marked the end of the first phase of the Beatles' artistic development. What is striking is the multitude of original compositions, which are lyrically held in a somewhat gloomy mood such as No Reply , I Don't Want to Spoil the Party or especially I'm a Loser ; here the influence of Bob Dylan on John Lennon can be seen.

John Lennon on Bob Dylan: “When I met Dylan, I was completely speechless. […] Instead of putting myself in a situation, I tried to express my personal feelings about what I did in my books. I think Dylan helped me a lot with that - not with discussions or the like, but by listening to his pieces. "

In the previous tradition, however, are pieces such as Every Little Thing and Eight Days a Week , which reached number one in the USA as the seventh single by the Beatles.

The optimistic I'll Follow the Sun is an older composition that Paul McCartney composed when he was 16.

Baby's in Black was played at Beatles concerts up to and including 1966.

The last recordings were made on October 26, 1964, the mono mixes took place on October 21, 22, 26 and 27, and the stereo mixes on October 27 and November 4, 1964.

The album Beatles for Sale entered the UK charts at number one on December 9, 1964, where it remained for nine weeks. The album had over 750,000 pre-orders in the UK. It was the Beatles' fourth number one album in the UK. Beatles for Sale ousted the previous album A Hard Day's Night from number one position. In Germany, it was the Beatles' third album that reached number one on the charts. While no single releases from the album Beatles for Sale were made in Great Britain , the German record company Odeon decided to release the three singles No Reply / Eight Days a Week , Rock 'n' Roll Music / I'm a Loser and Kansas City / Hey Hey Hey Hey / I Don't Want to Spoil Out the Party . The British version of Beatles for Sale was released in the US on July 21, 1987, and in July 2014 the album went platinum in the US for one million units sold.

A week before the album was released, on November 27, 1964, the single I Feel Fine / She's a Woman was released in Great Britain and became the sixth number one hit. The two songs on the single were also completed during the Beatles for Sale recording sessions .

The album Beatles for Sale was released in a mono and a stereo version. In Germany the album was only distributed in stereo mix.

In the mono version of the album, the song Words of Love fades out ten seconds later. The mono version of the album also includes other mixes of the songs I'm a Loser , I Don't Want to Spoil the Party (different mix of guitar), I'll Follow the Sun (use of less reverb) and What You're Doing (no clapping of hands at the beginning).

Other - unused - recorded versions of the songs Mr. Moonlight , No Reply , Eight Days a Week and Kansas City / Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey! are on the album Anthology 1 .

Cover design

The cover photos are from Robert Freeman . It shows the four Beatles on October 24, 1964 in Hyde Park , London . In Great Britain, the album was sold with a gatefold cover, on the inside of which a photo of a live performance by the Beatles as well as a photo collage with the Beatles and a text by Derek Taylor are printed.

In Germany, the album was sold in a simple cover, on the back of which, in addition to the text by the Beatles' press spokesman, Derek Taylor, another image was printed that was not used for the British edition.

Paul McCartney said of the cover: “The cover of the album was pretty nice. Robert Freeman took the photos. It happened very quickly. We had a session of a couple of hours and a couple of decent and usable photos. We did them in Hyde Park at the Albert Memorial . 'Just come as you are' was the standard phrase of the photographers, as we were mostly all dressed the same way anyway - black jacket, white shirt, thick black scarves. "
