The Crawford County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State Wisconsin . In 2010 , the county had 16,644 residents and a population density of 11.2 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Prairie du Chien , named after the French name of Prairie of the Dog , an Indian chief.

The County located in the southwest Wisconsin, north of the mouth of the Wisconsin River in the border Iowa forming Mississippi . It extends over an area of 1552 square kilometers, of which 69 square kilometers are water. The following neighboring counties border Crawford County:

history
Crawford County was formed in 1818 as the original county from parts of the Wisconsin Territory . It was named after William H. Crawford , the Treasury Secretary under James Monroe at the time. The first trading post here was established in 1685.
