Dana Rosemary Scallon (* 30th August 1950 in London , England as Dana Rosemary Brown ), called Dana , is a former Irish singer and politician . She grew up in Derry, Northern Ireland and won the Eurovision Song Contest with All Kinds of Everything as a student in 1970 ; since then she has released more than two dozen albums.

Dana ran for the office of President of Ireland several times, and in the 1997 election she won 13% of the vote. From 1999 to 2004 she was a Member of the European Parliament for Ireland .

Life

All Kinds of Everything , 1970

In 1970 she appeared with the song All Kinds of Everything at the Eurovision Song Contest in Amsterdam for the Republic of Ireland and won the country's first victory. Dana had other hits in the British and Irish music charts until the mid-1970s and also worked as a radio and television presenter.

Dana was also very successful in Germany with her singles My first love , don't play with me and my luck or build your house on love . Especially with the two singles If a girl is in love and Don't forget that I love you , she was in the top of many radio hit parades. Dana had a hit in 1972 with the song "Crossword Puzzle" written by Lynsey de Paul / Barry Blue in Thailand. The song was a new entry at number 7 on Bangkok Radio's HSA charts on August 26, 1972, as listed on Billboard (magazine) . It ranked second for 2 weeks (September 2nd and 9th).

Since she did not succeed in shedding the image of the "Sweetest Teenager on TV", her popularity declined and she turned to the interpretation of religious (Catholic) songs, for example Totus Tuus on the occasion of Pope John Paul II's visit to Ireland 1979.

In the 1980s, she moved to the USA with her husband Damien Scallon, where she became involved in a Christian network and moderated television programs with a religious background. She returned to Ireland in 1997 to run for President of Ireland as a non-party independent , but was defeated by Mary Robinson . In 1999 she won a seat in the European Parliament for the Connacht-Ulster region .

Scallon advocates family values and opposes abortion. However, when she rejected a government-proposed amendment to the constitution for stronger restrictions on abortions as not being strict enough, she lost a lot of support. When she ran again for a seat in the Irish elections in 2002, she only received 3.5 percent of the vote in her constituency.

In the 2004 elections to the European Parliament, Scallon missed a new parliamentary seat. She then focused again on a 2004 presidential candidacy, but was not nominated. On September 27, 2011, she was formally nominated for the October presidential election. She received 2.9% of the vote in the election.
