Border between Germany and the Netherlands
The border between Germany and the Netherlands is 567 kilometers long (excluding Dollart and in the outer area of the Ems). On the Dutch side, the provinces of Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, Gelderland and Limburg border on the neighboring country. On the German side, there are the federal states of Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia (each listed from north to south).
Unclearness about the border between Germany and the Netherlands only concerns the area of the Ems estuary at the transition from the Dollart to the North Sea. While the Netherlands regard the Talweg as their border, Germany takes the position that the state border runs on the left bank of the Ems.
In Bocholt - Suderwick the border divided a road; in relation to the immediately neighboring Dinxperlo there are special features as well as the borderland museum . The same applies to Eurode , a German-Dutch association of the cities of Kerkrade and Herzogenrath .
At the time of the COVID-19 pandemic , the heads of government of the Netherlands and North Rhine-Westphalia called on citizens to only cross the border in important cases. The movement of goods and commuters should continue. Many tourists were discouraged from crossing the border because tourist offers were mostly closed or only functioned to a limited extent.
