Division 1 1980/81

The Division 1 1981/82 was the 44th staging of the professional French football league. Champion was the fourth time since 1961 , the AS Monaco .

The first match day was July 24, 1981, the last match day on May 7, 1982. Although the French national team had qualified for the World Cup in Spain , there was a four-week winter break from December 21 to January 15.

The clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 17th were eligible to participate, as well as two direct promoters from the second division and the winner of the relegation round . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:

Season course

The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement.

The defending champions from Saint-Étienne, thanks to their invincibility - the Verts only allowed three draws against teams from the middle of the table - seemed to be able to live up to their favorite role again at the home of Stade Geoffroy-Guichard . However, they did not succeed in breaking away from a troika of persecutors consisting of Bordeaux, Monaco and Sochaux; After the 28th lap, the Girondins, who were particularly convincing away from home, took the lead for the first time, but this was followed by an up and downhill run. At first they fell behind Monaco, but overtook them again on matchday 33, which was followed by a “black series” (defeats in Saint-Étienne and Brest and at home against Lens and Auxerre).

This reduced the title fight to the duel Monaco against Saint-Étienne, two teams that both relied on an almost "hermetic defense" as well as the best attack rows in the league comparison, which is especially true for the Monegasque - with several young players and one in the professional area inexperienced coach - hadn't necessarily expected before the start of the season The decision between these was only made on the last day of the game, and there even in the last quarter of an hour. Because up to then the ASSE were fictitious champions because they led 7-2 against Metz (final score: 9-2) and thus made up for their one-point and four-goal deficit against ASM; only then did Monaco score the goal of the day to beat Strasbourg 1-0. In the case of record champions Saint-Étienne, who also had to hand over the title to his opponent Paris in the final of the national cup competition , a crisis that could no longer be overlooked since the previous season finally broke out. An internal split into two camps, the resignation of long-time President Roger Rocher , who also fell over the existence of a “ black box ”, and the departure of the team's star, Michel Platini , was followed by the long-lasting sporting decline of the Verts .

On this final day of the match, the Girondins made the headlines again. In protest against a suspension imposed on goalkeeper Dragan Pantelić for his unsportsmanlike behavior towards a linesman after the final whistle of the Lens game, Bordeaux's young coach Aimé Jacquet did not use his regular substitute keeper for the game in Nantes, but left the team play with the “flying goalkeeper”. During the first 60 minutes, the only 1.63 m tall, offensive midfielder Alain Giresse was in the Girondins' box, who received six hits; then he was replaced by the much longer central defender Marius Trésor in this position, who did not allow another goal for the remaining half hour.

At the lower end of the table, newcomers Montpellier and Nice had to prepare for the second division early on, and Valenciennes also knew before the last match day that his relegation depended on the outcome of the subsequent barrages against the third division 2 . In this, the lower class FC Mulhouse prevailed, which was represented in France's footballing "upper house" for the first time since 1937 in the following season . Then there were the two direct promoters FC Toulouse and FC Rouen .
