The university is located in Esslingen am Neckar (city center and Flandernstrasse) and Göppingen .

history

Through the merger of the two previously independent universities of Applied Sciences Esslingen (FHTE) and Esslingen University of Applied Sciences - University of Social Sciences (HfS), today's Esslingen University was created in 2006. The history of their predecessor schools goes back to 1868.

History of the former technical college

Former logo of the technical college

The year 1868 is considered the year the university was founded, when a department for the training of mechanical engineers was set up at the Royal Württemberg Building Trade School in Stuttgart . After years of efforts by the Esslingen industry and especially by the Kommerzienrat Paul F. Dick, this department was moved to Esslingen in 1914 and opened under the name of the Royal Württemberg Higher Mechanical Engineering School . After the First World War , the school was named Staatlich Württembergische Higher Mechanical Engineering School Esslingen . In 1927, departments for precision mechanics and volume production as well as for electrical engineering were set up. In 1938 the name was changed to the State Engineering School Esslingen . After the Second World War, a department for heating and ventilation was opened in 1947, and two years later the electrical engineering department was divided into heavy current engineering and communications engineering . In 1971 the school was renamed the Technical College for Technology Esslingen (FHTE) and the departments of computer science and industrial engineering were created. In 1979 the industrial engineering department moved to the university center on Flandernstrasse, the communications engineering and computer science departments followed in 1984. Four years later, in 1988, the branch in Göppingen was founded with the courses in mechanical engineering / manufacturing systems and microelectronics / micromechanics , and in 1995 the mechatronics department was established in Göppingen . A year later, the communication engineering and computer engineering departments were merged to form the information technology department . In 1998 the Graduate School was founded, which on the one hand expanded the range of courses to include master's courses and on the other - for the first time at the university - created an English-language educational offer. Since the winter semester 2005/2006, all technical and economic courses have been converted to the Bachelor / Master system.

History of the former technical college for social affairs

Former logo of the Fachhochschule für Sozialwesen

On the basis of a foundation from the Württemberg Queen Charlotte , the social women's school of the Swabian women's association was founded in Stuttgart in 1917, the first forerunner of the HfS. In 1930 a second facility was established, the youth leader seminar. In 1972, the two institutions became the University of Applied Sciences for Social Sciences (later University of Applied Sciences Esslingen - University of Social Sciences , HfS for short ). In addition to the former University of Applied Sciences Mannheim and the Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences Berlin , the HfS was one of only three independent universities of applied sciences with a specific focus on social and health care in Germany. From the 2004/2005 winter semester, the courses were converted to the Bachelor system. The first master’s degree in the Faculty of Social Work, Health and Nursing began one semester later, i.e. in the 2005 summer semester.

Esslingen University since 2006

In 2006, the two Universities of Applied Sciences in Esslingen, the Technical College of Technology (FHTE) and the Esslingen University of Applied Sciences - University of Social Sciences (HfS) merged. The new name of the university has since been Esslingen University . At the same time, responsibility was transferred from the Hohenheim Student Union to the Stuttgart Student Union. In the 2006/2007 winter semester, the new bachelor's degree “Education and Upbringing in Childhood” was introduced at the Faculty of Social Work , Health and Nursing, and in the 2007/08 winter semester the Master's degree in Innovation Management was added to the Business Administration faculty. There were other innovations for the 2007/08 winter semester, such as the master’s courses in “Automotive Systems” and “Design and Development in Automotive and Mechanical Engineering” in the Graduate School and the master’s course in “Energy and Building Management” in the Faculty of Supply Engineering and Environmental Technology have been established. In the summer of 2012, the Institute for Continuing Education at the Esslingen University of Applied Sciences (IWHE) was founded to promote academic training and further education. The IWHE takes on the organization and implementation of training programs as well as events such as meetings and congresses.

Locations

University center location (Flandernstrasse)

The Esslingen University of Applied Sciences has the following three locations:

  • Esslingen city center
  • Esslingen Flandernstrasse
  • Goeppingen

The city center is located directly in Esslingen and is also referred to as "the stable". Not because the neoclassical old building or the futuristic new building from 1992 resemble a stable, but because the school was originally located next to the royal riding stables. In addition to various faculties, the international office, Café Einstein, the cafeteria, the computer center, the rectorate and the administration of the Esslingen University of Applied Sciences are located at the city center location.

The Flandernstrasse location is located in the northern part of Esslingen and, thanks to its elevated position, offers a good view of Esslingen and the Neckar Valley. Students also refer to the large concrete building from the 1960s as the "Acropolis". The Flandernstrasse location houses faculties, the Esslingen University library, the HZE Café and the Institute for Foreign Languages.

The third location of the Esslingen University of Applied Sciences, founded in 1988 and of the same name, is located 23 kilometers away in Göppingen. The “short-distance campus” houses two faculties, a cafeteria, a library and the Café Campus.

German university partnerships

Under the motto “Strong regions, strong universities - connecting interests”, the University Alliance for Applied Sciences (HAWtech) has come together as a counterpart to TU9 .

The South West University Federation (HfSW) links the universities of Aalen, Esslingen, Heilbronn, Mannheim, Ravensburg-Weingarten and the Stuttgart Media University. The member universities join forces in order to further develop their performance in applied teaching and research. In cooperation projects, the member universities want to share experiences, exploit synergies and jointly provide answers to the increasing complexity in the university area.

International university partnerships

Esslingen University of Applied Sciences maintains partnerships with more than 60 universities around the world, of which more than 200 exchange students come to Esslingen every year. In addition, up to 90 international students acquire their master’s degree at Esslingen University each year.

The Chinese-German University of Applied Sciences (CDHAW) in Shanghai enables Chinese and German students to obtain a double degree. The CDHAW is an association of 27 German universities. As part of the CDHAW program, a Bachelor of Engineering in vehicle technology, mechatronics and electrical engineering and supply and environmental technology can be acquired as a double degree at Esslingen University. The Circle of Friends of the CDHAW ensures that the CDHAW is endowed with ideal and material support in all matters relating to teaching and research through grants to institutions of the CDHAW and through grants, grants or bonuses to their students or a scholarship fund.

internationalization

Internationalization and student mobility are essential components of studying at Esslingen University. The International Office prepares students for study-related stays abroad and supports students at Esslingen University of Applied Sciences before, during and after a semester abroad. The Esslingen University of Applied Sciences offers numerous scholarships for study and internship semesters abroad.

Three master’s courses in English convey knowledge in business administration in an industrial environment, in automation technology, in vehicle technology and in mechanical engineering. The courses are located under the umbrella of the Graduate School.

Traditions

A notable tradition at the Esslingen University of Applied Sciences is the annual candelabra march , during which the graduates of the technical courses march through the old town of Esslingen in tails and top hats and with a ladder. In Esslingen there is a working group of Akaflieg with the Flight Technical Working Group Esslingen (FTAG), and since 2006 a project group with the racing team that has been participating quite successfully in the Formula Student .
