Catherine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Katharina ( pronunciation ? / I ) is a female given name from the Greek Αἰκατερίνα or Αἰκατερίνη ( Aikaterina , Aikaterinē ). The origin of the name is disputed; only the Romans derived the name from the Greek adjective καθαρός ( katharos , "pure"), whose meaning "pure" it still carries today. The male equivalent (Latin: Catharinus ) appears only in connection with a clearly male first name (e.g. Barthélemy-Catherine). The name was widely used by St. Catherine of Alexandria in the 3rd / 4th Century. Audio file / audio sample

There are several theories about the origin of the name. Among other things, it could be a modification of the name of the Greek goddess of magic Hecate . Another possibility would be to modify the Armenian word Կատար ( gadar = "summit"). Furthermore, the Greek words εκάτερος ("one of the two"), ἑκατόν ("one hundred"), ἑκάς ("far away") and αἰκία ("mistreatment") are possible sources.
