Member of Parliament since 1976
In the state elections in Baden-Württemberg, each voter has only one vote, which is used to determine both the direct candidate and the total number of seats of a party in the state parliament . There are no state or district lists; instead, in order to establish the equalization of proportions, inferior constituency applicants are assigned second mandates . The regulation, which was valid until the 2006 election, provided for the allocation of these mandates according to the absolute number of votes at the level of the administrative districts, disadvantaged the Backnang constituency, as it was always one of the smallest constituencies in terms of population.
This made it difficult for applicants in the Backnang constituency to gain second mandates. The electoral system is therefore the main reason why the Backnang constituency was only represented in the state parliament by one directly elected member of the CDU between 1976 and 2011 . These MPs are:
Political party | Type of mandate | Elected |
---|---|---|
CDU | Direct mandate |
Erich Schneider 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988 Rosely Schweizer 1992, 1996 Wilfried Klenk 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016 |
SPD | Second mandate | Gernot Gruber 2011, 2016 |
AfD | Second mandate | Jörg Meuthen 2016, mandate resigned as of December 31, 2017 |
