history
The Malaysian Masters was one of a series of tournaments that premiered in Asia in the mid-1980s and was hosted by Barry Hearn's company Matchroom Sport and sponsored by French cognac brand Camus . As with other tournaments in this series, several amateurs were able to take part in the tournament in addition to the obligatory players of the world's best.
The first edition of the tournament took place during the 1984/85 season in September 1984 at the Selangor Club in Kuala Lumpur . Three professional players and two amateurs took part, but - as with the second edition - there was no prize money to be won. The tournament was held as a simple round-robin tournament. The winner was Terry Griffiths , who took first place in the group ahead of Tony Meo . Tony Meo played the highest break of the tournament with a 104 break. The second edition followed two seasons later, in the 1986/87 season . The tournament was held from August 28 to 30, 1986 in the Putra World Trade Center , this time three amateurs and seven professional players took part, who played in a knockout system for victory. Jimmy White won the tournament with a 2-1 win over Dennis Taylor . No breaks of more than a hundred points were played during the tournament. There were no further issues afterwards.
