The 1955/56 NHL season was the 39th season in the National Hockey League . Six teams played 70 games each. The Stanley Cup won the Montréal Canadiens after a 4-1 win in the final series against the Detroit Red Wings . Before the playoff game between Detroit and Toronto, a newspaper received death threats against Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay . Both dared to play. Howe scored once, Lindsay scored twice and the winning goal in overtime.
