Nikolaos "Nikos" Machlas ( Greek Νικόλαος Μαχλάς , born June 16, 1973 in Heraklion , Crete ) is a Greek former football player who played as a professional in the Netherlands, Spain, Cyprus and his home country. He was a striker for the Greek national team for nine years .

society

Machlas began his professional career at OFI in his Cretan hometown of Heraklion. In 1996 he moved to the Dutch first division club Vitesse Arnheim . After he had difficulty playing his scoring instinct in his first season, he was all the more convincing in the 1997/98 season: with 34 goals he was by far the top scorer in the Eredivisie and shot his club to the best league placement in its history. With 68 points, he also won the UEFA “ Golden Shoe ” for Europe's top goalscorer. After another year at Vitesse, he moved to league rivals AFC Ajax in Amsterdam in 1999 , where he scored 38 goals in three years and 74 games. An interlude at Sevilla FC was unsuccessful - Machlas only made 14 league appearances and only scored two goals. He went back to Greece, where he first played for Iraklis Thessaloniki and from 2004 to 2006 again in his home club. He then ended his professional career in Cyprus with the first division club APOEL FC .

National team

Machlas played 61 times for the Greek national team from 1993 to 2002 and scored 18 goals. He also took part in the 1994 World Cup in the USA .
