The municipality is located in the Slovakian Danube lowlands on the river island Žitný ostrov . The 34.82 km² large community area is flat and mostly deforested and covered by floodplain soils. The Little Danube and the Klátovské rameno and Chotárny kanál canals flow not far from the village . The center of the village is at an altitude of 112  m nm and is 16 kilometers from Dunajská Streda and 30 kilometers from Galanta .

history

The present municipality was created in 1940 through the merger of the places Dolný Ňáražd and Horný Ňáražd (then in Hungarian Alsónyárasd and Felsőnyárasd ). Today they are no longer part of the community.

The place Dolný Ňáražd was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1113 as Narias and initially belonged to the Agh family , then to other sexes; Serédy and Mérey are mentioned in 1553 and the village was divided between the estates of St. Georgen and Eberhardt before it became the seat of an independent estate and town in the 18th century. In 1720 there were 23 houses and in 1828 99 houses and 716 inhabitants.

The place Horný Ňáražd originated in the 13th century on the property that King Béla IV gave to the Bratislava chapter and provost and was mentioned for the first time in 1451. Originally the main sources of income were fishing and hunting, later replaced by agriculture and animal husbandry. Sturgeon catching was particularly lucrative for owners. In 1720 the village had a mill and 29 taxpayers, in 1828 138 houses and 989 inhabitants.

Until 1919, the places in Pressburg County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. Due to the First Vienna Arbitration Award , they were again in Hungary from 1938-45.

Surname

The name is derived from the Hungarian word nyárfa (= poplar ) and thus the name Nyárasd means something like "place where poplars grow". It is also the basis for the Slovak form Topoľníky introduced in 1948 .
