history

On the nearby mountains Hummelsberg and Asberg , ring walls from before the turn of the century were found. It is believed that people already settled here at this time.

The Kasbach flowing through the municipality marked the beginning of the border between Engersgau in the south and Auelgau in the north as early as the Middle Ages . The Gau border later became the border between the archbishoprics of Trier and Cologne, which still exists today . Until 1935, Kasbach was divided along this border into the municipality of “Obercasbach” ( district area : 174  ha ) belonging to the Linz district and the municipality of “Niedercasbach” (district area: 66 ha) belonging to the district of Unkel .

The municipality of Kasbach-Ohlenberg was newly formed on January 1, 1976 from the dissolved municipalities of Kasbach (area: 240 ha) and Ohlenberg (area: 238 ha). The districts of Niederkasbach , Oberkasbach and Ohlenberg remained.

Kasbach

The first documentary mention of Kasbach was in an exchange contract of the Prüm Abbey from 882, a little later with the name "Casbach" also in the Prümer Urbar from 893. In a document from Archbishop Hildolf of Cologne from 1076, the donation of a farm in "Casbach" mentioned.

Church of St. Maria Magdalena in the district of Kasbach

There must have been a chapel in Kasbach (Linz side) early on because it is reported that it collapsed around 1633. Together with the Catholics belonging to Trier and Cologne, a new chapel is built and St.  Michael is consecrated. The current Kasbach church was built in 1905 and is dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene .

The communities of Niederkasbach and Oberkasbach were merged on October 1, 1935 to form the community of Kasbach.

On May 25, 1987 Kasbach had 644 inhabitants.

Ohlenberg

A donation from Countess Mechthild von Sayn shows that in 1250 she bequeathed her possessions, which also included Ohlenberg, to the Archbishop of Cologne, Konrad von Hochstaden . From then on, Ohlenberg belonged secularly to Kurköln until 1803, with the Archbishop of Trier remaining the head of the church. Ohlenberg was first mentioned in 1262.

The efforts of the Archbishop of Cologne, Hermann V von Wied, to reform in the 1540s also had an impact on the Electoral Cologne city of Linz on the Rhine and the parish. In the violent disputes, the citizens of Ohlenberg and Ockenfels as well as part of the city council of Linz confessed to the innovations of the Reformation. After the elector was deposed, they had to return to the old faith.

Parish church of St. Nikolaus in the district of Ohlenberg

A chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas was probably built in Ohlenberg in the 13th century . In the Taxa generalis , a kind of inventory of the Archdiocese of Trier , a chapel was mentioned around 1380. In 1903 the new building took place in the neo-Romanesque style. Part of the choir from the 13th century and the tower from the 17th century have been preserved from the old church. On December 6th, 2009 the church received four church bells from the bell foundry of Maria Laach Abbey in the tones b 1 , d 2 , f 2 and g 2 ( Salve-Regina motif); the two smaller bells were cast on October 10, 2009 in Erl on the open field. Apart from modern tools for melting the bronze, the bell was cast using the traditional clay mold process.

In addition, the church is home to the first bell that was cast in the workshop of what would later become the “ Bochum Association for Cast Steel Manufacture” in 1852. Once again it was decommissioned, renovated and given a place of honor in the church. On special occasions, it can be attached with a rope. Their strike tone is g 2 .

On May 25, 1987 Ohlenberg had 618 inhabitants.

Erl

Erl was first mentioned in a document in 1257. In 1270, Gerhard von Rennenberg donated his property in Erl to the St. Katharinen Monastery , which he founded at the beginning of the 13th century , which he called "eyn precious hoiff". On May 25, 1987, the Untererl part of the municipality had 24 and the Obererl part of the municipality 46 inhabitants.
