Ring rocker band contest
The Ringrocker Band Contest (actual name: ringrocker.com Band Contest ) is a competition for underground bands from all over the world. The winner of the competition has the opportunity to appear as a newcomer at Rock am Ring . The winners of the 2012 competition, Destination Anywhere , were also confirmed at the sister festival Rock im Park .
history
The Ringrocker Band Contest was first held in 2004. The music competition is organized by the Rock-am-Ring community ringrocker.com . This will be held as a voting and live competition. Since the first edition in 2004, more than 5,000 bands have taken part in the competition, in 2012 alone there were 393 from 19 countries. The German music magazine VISIONS cooperates with ringrocker and also provides part of the jury in the first section of the contest.
procedure
registration
At the beginning of each year (mostly mid-January to mid-February), bands have the opportunity to register for the competition. To do this, a reference person must create a free profile on the ringrocker.com website and register the band. In most cases this caregiver is a musician within the band. Two items are required for registration, which are stored on an intermediate server (for example: Dropbox ). File sharing sites such as Rapidshare are not permitted, and links to Facebook , MySpace or ReverbNation are not accepted. A photo, a short biography and a website of the band are also required. Groups that have already taken part in the competition in previous years can register for the subsequent competition without having to create a new profile.
Voting
In order to determine the five best groups from the registered bands, the first two rounds of the competition take place as a voting. In the first round, a jury is formed from selected members of the ring rocker community and the magazine VISIONS , who rate each individual band with points. Each jury member gives a group one to five points, with one point being the worst and five points being the best. After four weeks, the points awarded are added up and the 50 groups with the highest rating are in the next round. If several groups have the same number of points as the band that is listed in 50th place, they will also start in the next round.
The second round of the contest is also a voting. In this round, the entire community has the opportunity to vote for their favorites. Again, one to five points are awarded here. Every community member has the opportunity to choose their favorites once. In order to ensure that the competition runs fairly, administrators check the competition. In the event of a violation that can be detrimental to other groups, the organization can also exclude the competition and disqualify the band in question. After 4 weeks, the points awarded by the community are added up. The five best bands then play in the finals for a free spot as a newcomer band at Rock am Ring .
final
The final, a live performance of the five best rated bands from the voting, takes place in concert venues that change every year. In 2012 the venue was the Skaters Palace in Münster , the year before the final took place in the Underground in Cologne . At the final, the local audience will decide on the winner of the competition. The winning bands each play a 25-minute or 30-minute set on the “Clubstage”. Until 2011, the contest winners played on the "Alternative Stage".

Line-ups (on the festival day of the contest winner)
In 2004 and 2005, the Ringrocker Contest winners played at the “Talent Forum”; between 2006 and 2009, the “Alternastage” and the “Clubstage”, which has since been launched, alternated. The contest winners have been playing on the “Clubstage” since 2012. The winning bands played on different days in recent years. Bands that win a festival newcomer contest usually play on the first day of the festival. A rare exception is the Summer Breeze's “New Blood Award” . There the six finalists play the winner on the first day of the festival, who plays a second time the next day.
