Rugby Union World Cup 2003 / Qualification

For the final round of the Rugby Union World Cup 2003 , which was held in Australia in October and November , the eight participants in the quarter-finals of the 1999 World Cup were automatically eligible to start. Ten of the twelve other available places in the tournament were occupied by the winners of regional qualifying tournaments, two more in qualifying games ( barrage ).

The qualifying tournaments were divided into five continental groups. A total of 80 teams took part, 12 from Africa , 17 from America , 10 from Asia , 32 from Europe and 9 from Oceania .

Africa

Africa had a permanent starting place for the finals. In addition, there was the opportunity for a second team to qualify via a barrage. In the group stages there were three points for a win, two for a draw and one for a loss; no bonus points were awarded.

In two groups, three teams each played against each other once. The group winners advanced to round 2.

Namibia qualified as Africa 1 directly for the World Cup finals. Tunisia advanced to the barrage round, playing as Africa 2 against Europe 5 . The winner of this game then played against America 3 for a place in the finals.

America

North and South America together had two fixed starting places available for the final round. In addition, a third team had the opportunity to qualify via a barrage (against the winner of the game Africa 2 against Europe 5 ). In the group stages there were three points for a win, two for a draw and one for a loss; no bonus points were awarded.

Round 1

The group winners played a playoff, the winner of which advanced to round 2.

Northern group

The teams from the Caribbean zone played against each other in a knockout round.

Although Russia won the round by a total of 58:41, it was found that they used unauthorized players from South Africa in these games. Therefore, Spain qualified for the barrage round and played as Europe 5 against Africa 2 . The winner of this game then played against America 3 for a place in the finals.

Oceania

Oceania had two fixed starting places available for the finals. In addition, a third team had the opportunity to qualify via a barrage. In the group stages there were three points for a win, two for a draw and one for a loss; no bonus points were awarded.
