Štós (up to 1927 in Slovak “Štós” - from 1927 to 1973 in Slovak “Štos”; German Stoss / Stoss or older Stoos , Hungarian Stósz ) is a municipality and health resort in eastern Slovakia . It is located in the Volovské vrchy Mountains , about 8 km from Medzev and 36 km west of Košice . The Bodva River rises to the west of the municipality . Neighboring municipalities of Štós are Smolnícka Huta in the north, Medzev in the east, Hačava in the south, Jasov and Smolník in the west.
The community was first mentioned in writing in 1341. In the past it was a mining settlement where iron ore, silver and gold were mined. The spa north above the village was founded in 1883 and represents the part of the municipality Štós-kúpele .
