Saint-Dizier is a city in France . Saint-Dizier is the capital of the Arrondissement Saint-Dizier in the west of the Haute-Marne department in the Grand Est region .
With 24,012 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017, 38,086 in the metropolitan area, which extends into the Meuse department ), Saint-Dizier is the largest city in the department.
geography
Saint-Dizier is located on the Marne River , which also feeds the Canal entre Champagne et Bourgogne ( German: Canal between Champagne and Burgundy ). This enables a navigable connection from the Paris area to the Mediterranean Sea using other rivers and canals .
About ten kilometers west of the city is the largest reservoir in France, the Lac du Der-Chantecoq .
history
In 1544, after the nearby town of Vitry-le-François had been destroyed by the armies of Charles V , Saint-Dizier withstood enemy attacks for six months. According to legend, King Francis I later described the inhabitants of Saint-Dizier as braves gars , brave guys . The name of the inhabitants, Bragards , is derived from this expression .

In 1926 the city came to the Arrondissement of Chaumont . In 1940 the arrondissement of Saint-Dizier was restored, with Saint-Dizier instead of Wassy as the main town .
The district and industrial site of Marnaval on the Channel Island on the eastern edge of the city has the postcode 55170 of the adjacent department of Meuse.
