The 1994 Winter Olympics took place in Lillehammer , Norway . The Olympic ice hockey tournament was held from February 12th to 27th. Twelve teams took part in this tournament. The venues were the Håkons Hall in Lillehammer and the rock ( Fjell ) hall in Gjøvik .
Eligible to participate were the eleven best teams in group A of the 1993 Ice Hockey World Championship, including host Norway and one qualifier. The two best teams from last year's B-World Cup , the winner of the C-World Cup and the world's highest ranking representative from Asia took part in the qualification tournament , which was held for the first time for an Olympic tournament . In addition, the strong team of the newly formed Slovakia came with a wildcard . The qualifying tournament took place in Great Britain .
Compared to the Olympic tournament in 1992 , there were no changes to the mode of the event this year . The preliminary rounds with two preliminary round groups were followed by the play-offs of the best eight teams with quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals as well as the placement games of the respective eliminated teams.
The Olympic champion was Sweden for the first time , who only defeated Canada in a shootout in a highly dramatic final . For Canada it was the second silver medal in a row. Bronze went to Finland .
