About this picture
Location of the city center-west within Dortmund.

The city district Innenstadt-West as one of the three inner city districts of Dortmund contains essential administrative and cultural facilities.

The inner city-west district includes the historic center of the city within the former ramparts and thus also the shopping center and the city's political institutions. To the south of it are urban residential quarters, first the clinic district around the Clinic Center Mitte of the Dortmund Clinic and the St. Johannes Hospital , then the Kreuzviertel and the sports facilities ( Westfalenstadion , Westfalenhallen , Rote Erde Stadium and Helmut-Körnig-Halle ) in the former Dortmund Volkspark .

To the west of the actual city center, there are dense residential developments around Rheinische Strasse ( Unionviertel ). This part of the city district is densely built up with architecture from around 1900. The houses used as residential buildings in the traffic-calmed side streets south of Rheinische Straße have been partially renovated.

The former Dortmunder Union brewery , whose main building is now known as the Dortmunder U , is located on the northern side of Rheinische Strasse . To the west of it lies the district of Dorstfeld , part of the city district , an area that was formerly characterized by mining , which is still visible today in a number of colliery settlements.

The city center district is loosened up by the Stadtgarten , Tremoniapark and Westpark parks .

District mayor is Ralf Stoltze (SPD). As in all city districts, the district representation downtown-west consists of 19 members (6 SPD, 5 B90 / Die Grünen, 4 CDU, 2 Die Linke, 1 Pirat, 1 AfD).
