The Tinner Dose -Sprakeler Heide is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony municipalities of Stavern in the Sögel municipality , Lathen in the Lathen municipality , the town of Haren (Ems) and the town of Meppen in the Emsland district .

General

The nature reserve with the NSG WE 177 label is around 3,955  hectares . It is largely part of the FFH area “Tinner Dose, Sprakeler Heide” and the EU bird sanctuary “Tinner Dose” and in places borders on parts of the landscape protection area “Forest areas on the Hümmling”.

The nature reserve was designated as of March 31, 2012. The previous nature reserve “Tinner and Staverner Dose” and “Sprakeler Heide” have merged into it. The previous nature reserve “Tinner and Staverner Dose” was designated on December 6, 1986. The 3,200 hectare area was marked NSG WE 177. The former nature reserve "Sprakeler Heide", which consisted of two parts, was already designated on August 1, 1953. It was 270 hectares and had the registration number NSG WE 042. The two nature reserves were directly adjacent to one another in the northeast. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Emsland.

The nature reserve lies entirely within the Meppen shooting range used by the Wehrtechnischen Dienststelle für Waffen und Munitions (WTD 91).

Tinner and Staverner Dose

The Tinner and Staverner can as large bog area lies southeast of Lathen and northeast of Meppen on the edge of Hümmlings . The moor has been drained over a large area, but has only been removed at the edges by peat digging . Further use of the peat does not take place due to the military use existing since 1877, whereby one of the largest contiguous raised bog areas of Lower Saxony could be preserved, which is largely tree-free. Wet meadows used extensively for agriculture can be found on the edge of the moor. These usable areas also serve as a buffer zone to the raised bog.

The nature reserve is home to a diverse fauna and flora. It is an important breeding area for the Montagu's Harrier and Hen Harrier, as well as a variety of waders , including common snipe , curlew and redshank . Furthermore, z. B. backed Shrike , Great Gray Shrike , Tawny Pipit , Skylark and stonechat home. The reserve is also the habitat of various amphibians such as the moor frog and natterjack toad, and reptiles such as the sand lizard , smooth snake and adder , insects including butterflies , grasshoppers and dragonflies, and other invertebrates . In the nature reserve settle u. a. Gagel , bell heather and rosemary heather , cranberry , round-leaved and medium sundew , bog lily , dragon root , marsh bear moss , white schnabelried and broad-leaved orchid .

Parts of the protected area are grazed with Przewalski horses for care .

In the north of the nature reserve, the boardwalk in the Tinner Dose is a prehistoric boardwalk .

The moorland is drained to the south via several ditches to the Grafts, a tributary of the Nordradde , and to the north to the Melstruper Beeke, which flows into the Dortmund-Ems Canal near Fresenburg , and to the Lathener Beeke, which flows into the Ems in Lathen .

Sprakeler Heide

The Sprakeler Heide lies between Lathen and Sögel , also on the edge of the Hümmlings. The heather area is also completely in the Meppen shooting range. It places a heather landscape on sandy geest soil and inland dunes under protection, which is the largest heather area in the Emsland . The dwarf shrub heaths are still home to black crowberry and interspersed groups of trees and bushes with English oak , juniper , English and hairy gorse . Silver grass and ostrich grass settle on open sandy areas .

In the south-east of the Sprakeler Heide, in the Sprakeler Heide barrow field, numerous barrows and a well-preserved stone grave can be found.

In order to preserve the landscape, it is grazed with sheep. Also Plagge stitches are performed for the regeneration of the heather.

Conflagration in September 2018

At the beginning of September, parts of the Tinner and Staverner cans caught fire on over 12 km² due to missile tests by the Bundeswehr. The fire destroyed numerous plants, but also seed reservoirs of rare plants in the peat . Animals that could not escape from the fire also perished. Further damage to the naturally nutrient-poor bog could have been caused by fire-fighting water containing nitrates. In the course of the extinguishing work, the upper soil layer was partially pushed off in order to reach the embers lying in the ground. In other areas, vehicles were used to leave muddy landscapes.
