After the final first leg, the game's leading Greek referee Gerassimos Germanakos was heavily criticized. In the 1-1 equalizer, the playmaker of SSC Napoli , Diego Maradona , initially took the ball with his hand and then shot Günther Schäfer from Stuttgart on his arm from close range. Nevertheless, Germanakos decided on hand penalty for Naples, which Maradona converted. After that game, the referee was suspended by UEFA . However, this had no further impact on him, as he had already announced his retirement after the game.
