The applicants with the best grades will be invited to either a German or English language assessment center. Another quarter of applicants are invited because of their special extracurricular commitment. The best participants in the assessment center then receive a study contract.
Master of Science
WHU invites suitable applicants to take part in an English-language selection process. The selection process consists of two 30-minute individual interviews. Selection procedures are also carried out in all other study programs at WHU.
Student body
Scholarship holders
With a share of 2.2 percent, WHU has the highest share of Germany scholarship holders of all universities in Rhineland-Palatinate. When awarding, aspects such as school performance, other scholarships, awards, practical experience, any professional training, the relative performance in the WHU selection process and additional burdens (e.g. marginal employment during school days) are taken into account by means of a points system.
Many students also use the study financing offer of the Reverse Generations Agreement from Brain Capital. During their studies, students do not have to pay any tuition fees; in return, after completing their studies, students pay an income-related training contribution over a period of 10 years.
A free place is available to a maximum of 15 percent of Bachelor students. When allocating free places, WHU follows the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG) . The prerequisite for entitlement to free space is that the income and assets side is entitled to BAföG or the income limit is only marginally exceeded (partial waiver).

Controversy
Allegations of dishonest scientific practice against Lichtenthaler
The economist Ulrich Lichtenthaler , who formerly worked at the University of Mannheim , received his doctorate and habilitation at WHU. In 2012 it became known that statistical errors had appeared in many of his published works, which led to the publications being republished in the respective journals. Many of the articles in question were based on his dissertation. In addition, his cumulative habilitation is affected. In addition to Lichtenthaler, his doctoral supervisor Holger Ernst is also affected by the errors in the work, as he had worked several times as a parallel author on the publications and was co-author on them.
Both the University of Mannheim and WHU then set up academic commissions to investigate possible academic misconduct. The then WHU Rector Michael Frenkel announced "full transparency" in the clarification of the facts. Originally, the first test results should be announced by the end of 2012. On September 11, 2013, Lichtenthaler was revoked of the teaching qualification he had acquired at WHU.
Allegations of non-transparent contract research against Schmidt
Sascha Schmidt , who has held the newly created Chair for Sport and Management at WHU since the beginning of 2014, but also worked at the EBS University of Economics and Law until the end of 2014 , published a scientific study on TSG Hoffenheim at the end of September 2014 . Since January 1, 2015, Schmidt has been employed exclusively at the WHU Center for Sports and Management.
In this study, he attested, among other things, to TSG Hoffenheim that it generates "seven times more income than costs for the public sector", that it is a "regional anchor of identity", that "83 percent of those surveyed are proud to be Hoffenheim" and that the Rhein-Neckar-Arena is considered to be "the second most important landmark just behind Heidelberg Castle". However, the Frankfurter Rundschau questioned the scientific independence of the study after its research had shown that the EBS chair had been financed by the TSG Hoffenheim patron, Dietmar Hopp , with a total of 1.5 million euros over five years was. In contrast to the information presented by the Frankfurter Rundschau, the institute had explicitly drawn attention to the collaboration with the “Dietmar Hopp Foundation”, especially in relation to the present study, in press conferences and in official press releases. The fact of support was therefore taken up in numerous media and by the association itself even before the article in the Frankfurter Rundschau.
Allegations regarding the learning culture
Author Benedikt Herles, who dropped out of studies at WHU after two semesters of study in 2005, is accused that the curricula u. a. Promote memorization and template thinking. For his criticism of the German higher education system, Herles used WHU as an example due to his personal study experience. Former WHU student Mojtaba Sadinam, who dropped out of WHU in the fourth semester to study philosophy and history at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , similarly criticized a university culture that is strongly oriented towards achievement. Not least after the death of a WHU student during an internship at a London investment bank in 2013, the then WHU Rector Frenkel warned against over-ambition and revision.
