The WWE Championship is the highest wrestling title that the US promotion WWE awards to male individual wrestlers of the raw rooster. The title was introduced on April 29, 1963, when the then affiliate Capitol Wrestling Corporation separated from the parent National Wrestling Alliance and founded the new promotion World Wide Wrestling Federation, a league in competition with NWA. In wrestling this championship is generally considered to be one of the most prestigious titles. The current title holder in his first reign is Drew McIntyre . As is common in wrestling, the award is based on a previously determined storyline .
history
origin
The WWE Championship was originally the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) World Heavyweight Championship . When the WWWF rejoined the National Wrestling Alliance in 1973 , the title lost its world status because the NWA only fought for its title within the United States.
In 1979 the WWWF was renamed World Wrestling Federation (WWF) , which also changed the name of the title to WWF Heavyweight Championship . In 1983 the WWF left the National Wrestling Alliance again, whereby the title regained the status of a world championship and was again the WWF World Heavyweight Championship .
Monday Night Wars and title union
In 1991, the World Championship Wrestling , a member of the NWA, introduced the WCW World Heavyweight Championship . In 1993 WCW separated from the NWA and developed into a rival promotion to the WWF. Both organizations rose to prominence and ended up embroiled in a television war known as the Monday Night Wars . Towards the end of the rating war, WCW's financial decline began, which in March 2001 led to the purchase of WCW by WWF. As a result of the purchase, the WWF acquired, among other things, the WCW championship. There were two world heavyweight titles in the WWF: the original WWF Championship and the WCW Championship .
In December 2001, the two championships were combined at the major event Vengeance . At the event, Steve Austin defeated Kurt Angle to keep the WWF Championship while Chris Jericho defeated The Rock for the WCW Championship. On the same evening, Jericho also won a victory against Austin. He combined the two world championships and became the first Undisputed WWF Champion . The Undisputed WWF Championship kept the line of the WWF Championship and the WCW Championship was discontinued. The title holder has now brought together the Big Eagle Belt and the Big Gold Belt . Jericho held the championship for four months until he lost it to Triple H at WrestleMania X8 , who was soon presented with a redesigned championship belt.
First fire split
The WWF was renamed World Wrestling Entertainment in 2002 due to a lawsuit with the World Wildlife Fund , which also renamed the title the Undisputed WWE Championship .
In the first brand split, the wrestlers were divided into two different squads, Raw and SmackDown . The Undisputed WWE Champion was the only wrestler allowed to appear in both shows as the championship was defended in both shows. After the appointment of Eric Bischoff and Stephanie McMahon as general managers of Raw and SmackDown respectively , McMahon convinced the then title holder Brock Lesnar to run exclusively for SmackDown . Raw was then left without a world heavyweight title. In response, Bischoff brought the Big Gold Belt back. The newly created World Heavyweight Championship was the no. 1 challenger Triple H awarded. Immediately thereafter, the Undisputed WWE Championship was renamed the WWE Championship .
In the course of the brand split, the WWE Championship switched several times between Raw and SmackDown , mostly due to the draft . In June 2006, WWE established ECW as the third show. When Rob Van Dam of the ECW won the WWE Championship at the major One Night Stand event on June 11, 2006 , the championship briefly became the world championship title of the ECW show. The ECW Championship was reactivated by Paul Heyman after Van Dam won the title . Van Dam held both titles until he lost the WWE Championship to Raw's Edge the following month .
Shortly before the end of the first brand split, CM Punk announced that he would be leaving the WWE with the WWE championship. At the big Money in the Bank event , punk managed to defeat John Cena to win the title. After winning the title, as announced, he left the WWE with the title belt, as his previous contract had expired after Money In The Bank , according to the storyline . In fact, a few days earlier, Punk had signed a new, much more lucrative contract with the WWE. On Raw , Rey Mysterio won an eight-man tournament by beating The Miz in the finals to be crowned the new WWE Champion . However, he lost the title on the same evening against Cena. After Cena's victory, Punk returned to WWE with the original championship belt and denied Cena's claim to the title. The two WWE champions competed against each other at the SummerSlam event. Punk defeated Cena to cement its claim to the title. The first fire split ended in August 2011.
Second unification of titles
At TLC Pay-per-View 2013 , the title was combined in a union match between John Cena and Randy Orton with the World Heavyweight Championship and renamed the WWE World Heavyweight Championship . The original World Heavyweight Championship was set.
Second fire split
Since the June 27, 2016 edition of RAW, the title has been promoted again as the WWE Championship. The title changed to SmackDown after another roster split at the WWE Draft 2016 with Dean Ambrose . In the July 26, 2016 issue of SmackDown, the title was renamed WWE World Championship , as RAW created a new main title with the WWE Universal Championship . Since December 13, 2016, the title is again referred to as the WWE Championship.
