geography

Česká Metuje is located in the valley of the Metuje ( Mettau ) at the confluence of the Vlásenka . The Ostaš (700 m) rises to the northeast .

Neighboring towns are Javor and Dědov in the north, Pěkov in the northeast, Bukovice and Žďár nad Metují in the east, Maršov nad Metují in the southeast, Horní Dřevíč in the south, Stárkov in the southwest, Vlásenka in the west and Skalka in the northwest.

history

In the first quarter of the 13th century, the Benedictines of the Břevnov monastery founded a settlement on the left bank of the Metuje, which was named after the river. Around 1260, German colonists founded another village on the opposite side. Metuge was first mentioned in documents in 1406. The part to the left of the river was subject to Police nad Metují , while the settlement on the right bank belonged to Stárkov . During the Hussite Wars , the Policer part briefly came into secular hands when it was given to Matthäus Salava von Leipa by Emperor Sigismund along with other villages.

The Metuje formed the language border; the village to the left of the river was Czech and that to the right of the Metuje was German. In 1790 it was divided into the cadastral municipalities Česká Metuj / Böhmisch Matha and German Matha / Německá Metuj.

After the abolition of patrimonial rule, the municipality Deutsch Matha / Německá Metuj with the district Wlasenka / Vlasenka was established on the right side of the river. Because Wlasenka was significantly larger than Deutsch Matha, the name of the municipality was changed to German Matha-Wlasenka / Německá Metuj-Vlásenka. Česká Metuj / Böhmisch Matha formed from 1849 a district of the municipality Žďár nad Metují and also belonged to the Braunau district . In 1875 the railway from Chotzen to Braunau was inaugurated . To the left of the Metuje, the Matha-Mohren / Metuj-Dědov train station was built north of Česká Metuj in the direction of Niedermohren / Dědov. Deutsch Matha-Wlasenka had 506 inhabitants in 1885, 496 of them were Germans. At the same time, 285 people lived in Česká Metuj. The municipality of Česká Metuj / Bohemian Matha was established in 1891. The Matha-Mohren / Metuj-Dědov train station, located in the corridors of Žďár nad Metují, was named Česká Metuj in 1923. In the 1920s, the Czech place names Česká and Německá Metuj were changed to Česká and Německá Metuje.

In 1930 there were 314 Germans and 39 Czechs living in Matha-Wlasenka in Deutsch; in Česká Metuje there were 222 Czechs and 23 Germans. After the Munich Agreement in 1938, both communities were added to the German Reich. Under the names Deutsch Matha and Böhmisch Matha, they belonged to the Braunau district until 1945 . In 1939, Böhmisch Matha had 197 inhabitants and German Matha 294. After the Second World War, the German population was expelled. In 1946, Česká Metuje and Německá Metuje were merged into one municipality, which was named Česká Metuje . Německá Metuje was renamed Metujka in 1950 and the name of the district Vlasenka was changed to Vlásenka. In the course of the municipal area reform, the incorporation of Skalka took place on January 1, 1961, at the same time the municipality came to Okres Náchod. In 1974 Metujka lost the status of a district.
