1st Lig 1977/78

The 1st Lig 1978/79 was the 21st season of the top Turkish league in men's football . It began on August 27, 1978 with the game Boluspor against Trabzonspor , which went 0-0, and ended on June 3, 1979. From December 17, 1978 to February 10, 1979 the season was interrupted by the winter break.

Trabzonspor finished the season again as Turkish champions after a season break. This season marked the third championship season for the great Trabzonspor team, better known as Karadeniz Fırtınası , who were to dominate Turkish football from 1975 to 1984 .

This season the number of relegated clubs was increased from two to three while the number of clubs remained the same.

For the 1st Lig 1978/79, the two promoted teams from the last second division season have been added to the 14 clubs that remained from the previous season . The climbers were the two second division champions Göztepe Izmir and MKE Kırıkkalespor . For Kırıkkalespor, the rise meant the first first division participation in the club's history, while Göztepe Izmir managed direct resurgence.
