The seventh 1000 km race on the Nürburgring , also VII. International ADAC 1000 km race, Nürburgring , took place on May 28, 1961 on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring and was the third round of the sports car world championship of that year.
Before the race
Before the race at the Nürburgring, two races of the sports car world championship were held in 1961. The 12-hour race at Sebring ended with the victory of Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien in work - Ferrari 250TRI . The Targa Florio also ended with an overall victory for the Ferrari works team . Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips and Olivier Gendebien won in the Ferrari Dino 246SP .
The race
As in the previous year , crowds of people came to the endurance race in the Eifel in 1961 . With an allegedly 270,000 spectators watching the race that started early on Sunday, a new visitor record was achieved. The interest of many in the Porsche works cars remained unbroken. Then came the successes of Wolfgang von Trips in 1961. Born in Cologne in 1928 , the descendant of one of the oldest noble families in the Lower Rhine region with ancestral seat in Burg Hemmersbach near Kerpen had become the first German to win the Formula 1 World Automobile Championship a week before the 1000 km race by winning the Dutch Grand Prix . The fact that von Trips started for Ferrari, Porsche's big opponent, gave the race a special charm. The Scuderia came to Germany with three works cars , two Dino 246SP and a 250 GT SWB . Only two chassis were built from the Dino 246SP, both of which were at the Nürburgring. The vehicles had independent suspension and disc brakes all round, the Spyder bodies came from Carrozzeria Fantuzzi . The dinosaurs were driven by Trips, Phil Hill , Richie Ginther and Olivier Gendebien. Willy Mairesse and Giancarlo Baghetti sat in the 250 GT SWB .
Porsche had further developed the 718 again. The 1.6-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine now developed 160 hp (118 kW). For the first time, 2-liter, 8-cylinder boxer engines were used in training, which were removed again before the race and replaced by 1.6-liter engines. Race director Fritz Huschke von Hanstein signed the 1000 km race record winner with Stirling Moss . The Briton had won the race four times so far. In 1956 he won together with Harry Schell , Piero Taruffi and Jean Behra in the factory - Maserati 300S , 1958 (with Jack Brabham ) and 1959 (with Jack Fairman ) in the Aston Martin DBR1 / 300 and last year with Dan Gurney in the Camoradi Racing Maserati Tipo 61 . Moss competed in the race with fellow countryman Graham Hill . Gurney, Joakim Bonnier , Edgar Barth and Hans Herrmann were entrusted with two 718 RS 61 cars. The third works Porsche was a 356 B Carrera Speziale , driven by Herbert Linge and Sepp Greger .
The Scuderia Serenissima brought two new Maserati Tipo 63 to the race. Nino Vaccarella spoke of an immature vehicle after the first training laps. In addition to Vaccarella, Ludovico Scarfiotti , Maurice Trintignant and Umberto Maglioli drove the Maseratis. The two young Rodríguez brothers Ricardo and Pedro drove a Ferrari 250TRI / 61 from the North American Racing Team and last year's winner, the Maserati Tipo 61 from Camoradi Racing, was this time in the hands of Masten Gregory and team owner Lloyd Casner .
After the Le Mans start , Jim Clark took the lead in the three-year-old Aston Martin DBR1, which he lost to Stirling Moss in the Porsche during the first lap. After eleven laps, the order of trips and gendebies in the Dino 246SP was ahead of Moss in the Porsche and Masten Gregory in the Maserati. During the 16th lap the long-awaited rain set in. On the wet road, Moss, who had meanwhile dropped to fourth place, started a race to catch up that brought him up to second place. The journey ended on the 22nd lap due to an engine failure. At halftime, Phil Hill led in the Dino 246SP five minutes ahead of Casner in the Maserati. The second dinosaur had fallen behind after a long pit stop. The decision was made in the 24th lap when Phil Hill had an accident in the airfield section because he came across an oil trail. The car caught fire and was severely damaged; Hill was unharmed. In the end, Camoradi Racing won again with the Tipo 61. The lead over the Rodríguez brothers was one lap.
