As in the previous season , the league was two-pronged, with both seasons starting with ten teams each. First, a preliminary round was played in the form of a double round, so that each club played two home and two away games against the other teams in its group. The best four teams from both groups then took part in the relegation round to the Bundesliga , while the remaining teams had to play for their starting place in the league in the relegation rounds in the north and south. The round was held in one group in the north and in two groups in the south.
