The 2nd women's league , also known as the 2nd league, formerly known as the women's league or 2nd division, is the second highest level in Austrian women's football. The champion is promoted to the ÖFB Women's Bundesliga . The second Austrian women's league is designed for a maximum of 12 teams and should include a promoted player from the third-highest division, the regional league, which is structured according to the borders of the Austrian federal states. The club on the relegation places is relegated to the respective national league. Apart from Burgenland, every association has its own regional league.

Amateur teams of the clubs of the ÖFB Women's Bundesliga are excluded from promotion to this.

In the 1979/80 season , a second league was introduced in eastern Austria for clubs from Vienna and Lower Austria, with teams from Burgenland added later. It was called women's league east (2nd level). Since the 1st level and the 2nd level were called the same, the women's league east for the 2nd level was renamed the 2nd division from the 1993/94 season. The master from the women's league east (2nd level) rose to the women's league east (1st level). In the 1981/82 season there were three promoted teams, so that the following season the top performance level had ten clubs for the first time.
