The Club Atlético River Plate , commonly known as River Plate (to differentiate it less often in German-speaking countries, River Plate Buenos Aires ) is a football club from the Argentine capital Buenos Aires, founded in 1901 . The team plays in the Primera División and plays their home games at the Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti (also known as El Monumental ) in the Nuñez district . River Plate is Argentina's record champions.

history

The team that made promotion to the first division in 1908.

Like its biggest rival, Boca Juniors , River Plate was founded in the La Boca district. However, River Plate moved to the Nuñez neighborhood in 1938 . The games between River Plate and the Boca Juniors are called Superclásicos in Spanish and split the nation into two camps.

River Plate played for the first time in the Argentine first division in 1909. In 1920 the club was able to celebrate its first championship title. From 1923 River Plate played its home games at the Estadio Alvear y Tagle in the Recoleta district . In 1938 the company moved to the Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti . The club got its nickname Los Millonarios ( the millionaires ) in the early 1930s due to transfers, which River paid mostly in gold.

In 2011, the club had to relegate to the Primera B Nacional for the first time in 80 years. After the first half of the season, the team was in 9th place (out of 20 participants); after the second half of the season in 6th place. In the three-year ranking, which calculates the relegated team, River Plate was 17th after the two weak seasons in previous years. The relegation games against second division club Atlético Belgrano ended 0: 2 and 1: 1. It came in the second leg in their own stadium shortly before the end of the game to such serious riots that the Asociación del Fútbol Argentino River Plate withdrew home rights in the Monumental for five games in the 2nd division . The club, however, managed to get up again directly.

In 2014, in addition to winning the Torneo final, he also won the Copa Sudamericana . A year later, the Copa Libertadores could finally be won for the third time. In both years he also won the Recopa Sudamericana . In 2018 , the success in the Copa Libertadores could be repeated. The victory qualified for participation in the FIFA Club World Cup 2018 . Here River was set for the semi-finals, but was eliminated from the game against the Al Ain Club on penalties.

Titles and records

River Plate is the undisputed leader of the all-time table in Argentina ahead of the Boca Juniors. In addition to the title of Argentine record champion, there was only record participation in CONMEBOL competitions, most international titles have so far gone to Boca.

El Monumental

The Estadio Monumental during the opening of the 1978 FIFA World Cup

The Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti was named after the former club president Antonio Vespucio Liberti. It is located in the Belgrano district near the border with Núñez and has a capacity of 65,645 visitors.

El Monumental was built from 1936 to 1938 and opened on May 25, 1938 with a game between River and Uruguayan club Club Atlético Peñarol (3-1).

The stadium was renovated for the Football World Cup in 1978 . The opening game and the final of the World Cup were played in El Monumental, which at that time still had a capacity of 76,600.

1985 home shirt

The jersey with the distinctive diagonal stripe has been in use since the year it was founded. Allegedly there was a playoff game with Boca for the club colors red and white in 1907, which was obviously won by River Plate.

Third shirt from 2002

For home games, a white shirt with a red diagonal stripe from left to right, black trousers and white socks are used. A black jersey, black shorts and red socks are worn away. The third jersey has vertical stripes in red, white and black. In addition, black trousers and white socks are worn.

Nicknames

Fans rush to the field to celebrate the 1945 championship.

The club was nicknamed Los Millonarios (the millionaires) in the early 1930s due to the transfers of Carlos Peucelle (1931, 10 million Pesos) and Bernabé Ferreyra (1932, 35 million Pesos), which River paid for the most part in gold. In the years 1978–1981 River Plate was known as one of the most expensive teams in the world. The fans are proud of this name, as it is to be understood as a contrast to the Boca Juniors, who come from the poor port district.

Opposing fans like to refer to River and his fans as gallinas (chicken). This nickname comes from an encounter with CA Peñarol , a very successful club from Uruguay . River was already leading 2-0, but lost the game 2-4. However, River fans find the name less offensive, as the stadium is often ironically referred to as Gallinero in their chants . According to the motto, rather be a Gallina than a Bostero , as River fans call the followers of Boca Junior. Bosteros were the city servants who used to clean the streets of La Boca from horse droppings.

Due to the distinctive red diagonal stripe on the jersey, the team is also known as El equipo de la banda roja (The team with the red ribbon), or simply La Banda (which can also mean 'The Troop'). Some teams from the successful River years also earned their own nicknames, for example the team from 1941 to 1945, which was called La Máquina (The Machine). La Máquina scored more than 700 goals for River Plate. When three Argentine titles, the Copa Libertadores and the Supercopa Sudamericana were won in 1996 and 1997 , the press sometimes called the team La Maquinita (The Little Machine). The team included Enzo Francescoli and young players such as Juan Pablo Sorín , Hernán Crespo , Ariel Ortega and Marcelo Gallardo .

National player

In 1909 Elías Fernández made his debut as the first millionaire for the Argentine national team in the game against Uruguay in Montevideo, which ended 2-2. A year later Fernández should also score the first goal of a river player for the Albiceleste in a friendly against Chile .

The record for a river player is held by Daniel Passarella , who in his time at River Plate (1976-1982) completed 52 missions and also scored the most goals (18) of a player under contract with the national team. He was also given the honor of being the first Argentine to take the World Cup in hand as captain of the selection for the 1978 World Cup in his own country. A record that is difficult to set by another team was set during qualifying for the 1958 World Cup against Bolivia (4-0). With Carrizo, Pérez, Sola, Vairo, Rossi, Prado, Menéndez, Labruna and Zárate, there were a total of nine players from River Plate for the Argentine selection. River Plate provided the most (47) national players for the Argentine national team to date. Apart from the 2006 World Cup in Germany , there was always at least one millionaire on the Argentine team at soccer world championships.
