Dinamo Riga ( Latvian Rīgas "Dinamo" , Russian Динамо Рига ) is a Latvian ice hockey club from Riga , Latvia . It was formed on April 7, 2008 to play in the new Continental Hockey League . The club is owned by several companies and individuals, including Itera Latvija (Latvian gas company owned by Gazprom ), Guntis Ulmanis (the fifth president of Latvia), Aigars Kalvītis (former Prime Minister of Latvia) and Aldis Pauniņš .

history

At the end of May 2008, the former HK Riga 2000 coach, the Slovak Július Šupler , was introduced as the new head coach. His compatriot Miroslav Miklošovič was hired as an assistant coach from the Slovak first division club HC Slovan Bratislava . A short time later, one of the co-owners, Viesturs Koziols , announced that Dinamo Riga would not sign any Russian players and that they would only sign other top European players besides Latvian national players.

In June and July 2008 Marcel Hossa were then signed by the Phoenix Coyotes , Matt Ellison and Filip Novák to strengthen the squad. Later came Duvie Westcott and Ronald Petrovický and Artūrs Irbe , who was hired as a goalkeeper coach. The HK Riga 2000 of the Latvian Hockey League acted in the 2008/09 season as a farm team of the club.

After a robbery on goalkeeper Edgars Masaļskis in September 2008, in which Masaļskis was injured, the management of the club signed the Swedish goalkeeper Daniel Sperrle for two months with an option to renew his contract for the entire season. However, the contract with Sperrle was terminated at the end of October 2008. Instead, the Czech Martin Prusek , who was henceforth the team's regular goalkeeper, was signed. At the end of the season they finished tenth in the KHL and reached the playoff round of 16, where they lost all three games against HK Dynamo Moscow and were eliminated.

In the summer of 2009, Mark Hartigan , Matt Ellison , Filip Novák and Duvie Westcott left the club. Martin Kariya , Mike Iggulden and Lee Sweatt were signed as replacements . The biggest sensation, however, was the signing of the contract by NHL veteran Sandis Ozoliņš , who returned after a year of inactivity and also took over the captaincy. Due to financial problems, the HK Riga dissolved in 2000, so that Dinamo founded its own farm team with the Dinamo Juniors Riga , which took part in the Belarusian extra league. After a year, this junior team was transferred to HK Riga , which has been participating in the Molodjoschnaja Chokkeinaja Liga (MHL) since 2010 .

For the 2011/12 season, the Finn Pekka Rautakallio was signed as head coach and replaced all foreign players except for goalkeeper Chris Holt with new signings.

As a representative of the KHL , Dinamo Riga took part in the Spengler Cup 2011 and only lost to HC Davos in the final .
