Eywiller (German Eyweiler ) is a French commune with 280 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in Crooked Alsace in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ).

history

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Eywiller belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the district of Zabern in the district of Lower Alsace .

Like many rural communities in Alsace, the place is a stronghold of right-wing and nationalist parties. In 2004 elections, the French media were particularly interested in how the small Alsatian village of Eywiller would vote, as Jean-Marie Le Pen had over 45% of the vote there in the 2002 presidential election . A French photographer took pictures of the windows of many houses and his photo exhibition provocatively Heilwiller! called. In protest, only 20% of the electorate went to the ballot box. Only 40 ballot papers were cast in the village, ten of which were invalid. Of the 30 valid votes, eleven were from extreme right-wing parties, twelve from the conservative ruling party UMP and the rest from splinter parties .
