history
Fayette County was formed on February 14, 1821 from parts of Bon, Clark and Crawford Counties and named after Marie-Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette , who helped the French colonists in the Revolutionary War against the British. In late 1834, Abraham Lincoln , who later became the 16th President of the United States, began his career as a lawyer in that county.
