The Holmes County is a county in the state of Florida of the United States . The county seat is in Bonifay .

The county is located in northwest Florida, between Pensacola and Tallahassee , about 50 km north of the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 1266 square kilometers, of which 16 square kilometers are water. The county is crossed by the Choctawhatchee River . It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Jackson County , Washington County, and Walton County .
history
Holmes County was formed on January 8, 1848 as the 27th County of Florida from parts of Jackson County. It was named after Thomas J. Holmes from North Carolina , who had already settled here in 1830. Other sources say the county was named after Holmes Creek , which forms the county's natural western boundary.

According to the 2010 census , Holmes County had 19,927 people in 8,612 households. The population density was 15.9 inhabitants per square kilometer. Racially, the population was composed of 90.5% white, 5.8% African American , 0.8% American Indian and 0.4% Asian Americans . 0.5% were members of other races and 2.0% of different races. 2.2% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 31.6% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 33.0% of all households. 69.4% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.47 people and the average family size was 2.96 people.
24.0% of the population were younger than 20 years, 24.3% were 20 to 39 years old, 28.2% were 40 to 59 years old, and 23.6% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 41 years. 53.2% of the population were male and 46.8% were female.
The median income for a household in the 34,928 USD , while 22.6% of the population lived below the poverty line.
In 2010, English was the mother tongue of 95.50% of the population, 2.26% spoke Spanish and 2.24% had another mother tongue.
