The county is located in the central northwest of Missouri and is bordered to the north by the Missouri River . It has an area of 1655 square kilometers, of which 25 square kilometers are water. The following neighboring counties border Lafayette County:

history
Lafayette County was formed in 1820. It was named after Marie-Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette (1757-1834), a French general and politician who took part in the American Revolutionary War on the side of the colonists and played an important role in the French Revolution .
