Laura Siegemund (born March 4, 1988 in Filderstadt ) is a German tennis player .

Career

Siegemund, who started playing tennis at the age of three, was the first German since Steffi Graf to win the Junior Orange Bowl in the under-twelve class in 2000 . In 2002 she gained her first experience on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour , where she won her first professional title in 2006.

In the same year she received a wildcard for the qualification of the German WTA tournaments in Berlin and Stuttgart , but was eliminated in the first round. As a result, Siegemund found it difficult to master the transition from the juniors to the women and her performance stagnated at the medium ITF level. In 2009 she made her debut in qualifying for the US Open and failed again in the opening round. The following year she survived the qualification for a WTA tournament in Båstad for the first time, but there, too, she lost in the first round. It was not until 2011 that after winning an ITF tournament in the $ 25,000 category in Lutz, she made her first jump into the top 200 in the world rankings and her first victory in a Grand Slam qualification in Paris . In 2012 and 2013 Siegemund only appeared sporadically on the ITF tour, but was able to win six titles. After two more tournament wins in America in 2014, she was able to record her first success in the main draw of a WTA tournament in Båstad against Jaroslawa Schwedowa , before losing to Chanelle Scheepers in three sets in the second round .

In 2015 Siegemund qualified for the first time in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon , but lost there to Svetlana Kuznetsova . She then reached a WTA quarter-finals for the first time in Florianópolis and won her biggest title to date in a tournament in the $ 100,000 category in Biarritz . Due to its success, it was included in the top 100 in the world for the first time at the end of the year. It went even better for Siegemund in doubles: In June 2015 she won her first title on the WTA Tour at the tournament in 's-Hertogenbosch alongside Asia Muhammad ; she won her second together with Annika Beck in Florianópolis . At the end of the season she triumphed together with Mona Barthel in Luxembourg .

In the following year Siegemund had the final breakthrough on the WTA Tour. The start of the season on hard court with the entry into the third round at the Australian Open 2016 after a victory over Jelena Janković was already successful, so she made her way to the quarter-finals in Charleston and, coming from the qualification, the third round in Madrid especially as a clay court specialist. Her overwhelming success, however, was her participation in the final at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix 2016 in Stuttgart, where she defeated three top 10 players in a row with Simona Halep , Roberta Vinci and Agnieszka Radwańska before losing to Angelique Kerber in the final . After first round defeats in Paris and Wimbledon , Siegemund succeeded in Båstad after beating Kateřina Siniaková in her second final, her first title win on the WTA Tour. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, she achieved the quarter-finals after successes over Zwetana Pironkowa , Zhang Shuai and Kirsten Flipkens , where she had to admit defeat to the later gold medalist Monica Puig . She competed in doubles together with Anna-Lena Grönefeld , but there she failed at the start to Swetlana Kuznetsova and Darja Kassatkina . After she got into the third round for the first time in New York , she achieved her highest place in the world rankings with 26th place the following week. She also won the mixed title there with Mate Pavić . The unset pairing was there for the first time; She and Pavić had teamed up because they were both looking for a mixed partner.

At the beginning of 2017 Siegemund was able to win only one of nine hard court games before she made it to the semi-finals in Charleston and her greatest career success to date, winning the 2017 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, where she was last year's finalist with a wild card came into the field, with Swetlana Kuznetsova, Karolína Plíšková and Simona Halep again beat three top 10 players in a row and triumphed in the final against Kristina Mladenovic . After returning to the top 30 in the world, she started in the run-up to the French Open at the WTA tournament in Nuremberg and suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in her knee in the round of 16 against Barbora Krejčíková at 6: 4 and 5: 5, which she did for the rest of the time Year incapacitated.

It wasn't until March 2018 that she returned to the women's tour at an ITF $ 25,000 tournament in Santa Margeritha di Pula . In her first appearances on the WTA Tour in Charleston and Stuttgart , she came into the second round, in Bucharest and Moscow she then reached the quarter-finals and won the title at the ITF tournament in Bad Saulgau . Together with Alexandra Panowa she won her biggest WTA title in doubles at the end of the season at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow. In 2019 Siegemund, who survived the first round of all Grand Slam tournaments of the year, worked her way back into the top 100 in the world. Her best result of the season in singles she achieved in Bucharest, where she was able to advance to the semi-finals. In the mixed competition at Wimbledon , she moved into the quarter-finals with Artem Sitak . She also won her fifth double title on the WTA Tour at the side of Peng Shuai towards the end of the season in Guangzhou .

In 2017 Siegemund made her debut for the German Fed Cup team in a duel against Ukraine . Since then, she has played five singles and doubles matches for her country, of which she has won three (individual balance 2: 1).

Bundesliga

Laura Siegemund finished third in the Bundesliga in 2010 with TC Zamek Benrath . From 2011 to 2014 she played there for the Ratinger TC Grün-Weiß . In the 2015 season she was in the squad of TC Rüppurr Karlsruhe , for which she achieved the best result of all Bundesliga players with ten wins in as many appearances.
