List of monasteries in Saxony
The list of monasteries in Saxony includes both the current monasteries and monasteries and former monasteries in Saxony , some of which are now in Brandenburg , Saxony-Anhalt , Thuringia and Poland .
The establishment of monasteries took place in rural areas to reclaim the area (mostly Benedictines and Cistercians ) and in cities for the spiritual care of the residents. The number of monasteries (especially the mendicant orders ) in a city reflected the wealth of the individual cities. The Dominicans , Franciscans , Carmelites and Augustinian hermits are among the mendicant orders .
