If this does not succeed in a certain period of time, Tozan feels obliged to perform ritual seppuku due to his strict code of honor . A careful study of Tozan's values and Japanese ceramics finally puts Magnum on the right track, which leads to a Japanese businessman. Notes: The Japanese actor Makoto Iwamatsu can be seen in the role of Tozan . The opening sequence depicting the robbery of Kenzan was filmed in the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park , a tourist attraction on the east coast of Oahu. The idea of the producers and scriptwriters to include a character like Tozan in the series can be attributed to the western enthusiasm for ninja , which had just reached a new peak in the early 1980s. Higgins is more than uncomfortable about Elizabeth's presence and so he urges Magnum, Dr. To find Albert Tessa as soon as possible so that she can leave. When Dr. Tessa shows no interest in giving an interview, it turns out that Elizabeth is not who she claims to be, but a KGB agent who is supposed to eliminate Tessa.
Notes: The guest stars in this episode are Sylvia Sidney in the role of Elizabeth Barret and Joseph Wiseman as Dr. Albert Tessa, known from the James Bond flick 007, is chasing Dr. No from 1962. In one remarkable scene, Magnum is attacked by a yellow and breasted macaw, but can be saved by Higgins' imitation of a bird's call, whereupon the bird, panicked, flees and is torn apart by the rotor blades of TC's helicopter (which is only hinted at).

For Robin Master's new novel, Higgins is doing research on the experiences of Japanese-born inmates at the US internment camp at Sand Island in Hawaii during World War II. When Higgins had an accident with the Ferrari due to manipulated braking systems and was seriously injured, Magnum recognized connections between Higgins' research and the accident: a Japanese inmate on Sand Island was murdered by civilian guards in 1942.
Note: In a review with Higgins, Magnum mentions Damn In All Eternity (1953) as the film that "says practically everything about the war".

When the body of Marcus Philips, an award-winning lifeguard and long-time volleyball partner Magnums, was washed up on the beach, the police assumed it was an accident, but the circumstances surrounding his death seem strange to Magnum: on the one hand, he was too good a swimmer on the other hand, he shows up with an expensive sports car just the day before his death.
Notes: In a well-known scene in this episode, Magnum is beaten up by two women in aerobics outfit. American Olympic athlete and beach volleyball player Sinjin Smith can be seen in the role of Marcus Philips .

When one day a small propeller plane on the way from California to Hawaii had to make an emergency landing in the tide pool of the property and suffered a total loss in the process, Magnum, who barely managed to save himself from the approaching machine by jumping to the side, had a vague idea, the pilot even though he has never seen him know from anywhere. When strangers approach the wreck during the night and search it, it quickly becomes clear that the emergency landing was not an accident: lead ingots were hidden in the seats to crash the plane over the sea.
Notes: What is striking about this episode is that neither Rick nor TC are featured, Magnum himself only plays a supporting role. The focus of the plot is the former Vietnam pilot Sam Houston Hunter ( William Lucking ). The episode was used by the producers to test a pilot for a new series that would be about a former fighter pilot and treasure hunter and his family. In the end, the concept was not used in this form, but was used as the starting point for Airwolf . In the end credits, however, you can hear the title melody that Mike Post composed for the original series idea. Blaxploitation actor Richard Roundtree , known from the title role in Shaft, can be seen in a supporting role .
61 21st What are friends for? ... by its cover Jan. 31, 1983 March 12 1985
Rod Crysler, a Vietnam comrade and old friend of Magnums since the days of his naval training, shows up one day at the property and pretends to make his living now as a salesman for multi-volume conversational dictionaries. He asks Magnum to deliver a suitcase allegedly containing one of these dictionaries to a customer on another island. Without knowing it, he is abused as a drug courier in this way and can only barely save himself from this precarious situation together with TC. But Magnum does not want to immediately believe that Rod got him wrong and set him up.
Notes: In the role of Rod Crysler you can see Stuart Margolin , who previously played a supporting role in the series Detective Rockford - A Call Suffice (1974–1980), in which Tom Selleck also had a guest appearance. At the beginning of this episode you can hear the Doors- inspired song Rod's Song by Mike Post and Pete Carpenter .

Even a tropical cyclone that paralyzes the telephone network and the power supply of the islands cannot prevent Higgins from hosting an exclusive party for a small group of illustrious guests and friends of Robin Masters. Despite the adverse circumstances, all of the guests appear on time for the dinner party when the property is attacked by armed gangsters. Despite this incident, Magnum maintains an overview, because he can easily deal with the gangsters, but not with the invited guests, one of whom is planning an assassination attempt on Robin Masters. To find out, he and his friends Rick and TC set a trap for the assassin.
Notes: Hurricane Kukana takes place exclusively inside the property and is one of the few episodes in the series in which Robin Masters appears in persona. In the role of Archie MacPherson, Robin Masters accountant, is James Doohan , best known as Scotty, chief engineer of Starship Enterprise . Higgins makes it clear, when he is mistaken for a doctor, having received his doctorate in mathematics from the University of Cambridge in 1947 .

Notes: John Hillerman is seen here in a double role, and Richard Johnson has his second appearance as British Army Brigadier Alistair Folks . He was first seen in this role in the first season, episode 3. This episode, the discharge of which forms a newscast on a program of the British army against the IRA, as a result not synchronized 1:03 of the ARD, because dealing with the conflict in Northern Ireland felt was inappropriate for an entertainment program.

Magnum manages to remove Jerome's suspicions and win him over to the game.
Notes: The figure of the magazine publisher Buzz Benoit, who likes to surround himself with all sorts of luxury and lightly clad young models called "Buzzets" ( Playmates ), is very reminiscent of Hugh Hefner . Buzz Benoit is portrayed by Dick Shawn , who starred in such films as A Totally, Totally Mad World (1963) and as Hitler in Mel Brooks ' farce Spring for Hitler (1968). Robin Masters published his first short story Babes in Babylon in Buzz Benoits magazine in 1961 . Higgins is a recipient of the Victoria Cross , the British armed forces' highest war award . 86 2 Black mirror part 2 Echoes of the Mind Part 2 Oct. 4, 1984 Aug 13, 1985
After Magnum stayed at Diane's house to protect her, her twin sister Deirdre suddenly shows up in the morning. When she tells Magnum that her sister Diane is insane and is just imagining the persecution, he doesn't really know who to believe. It wasn't until he checked the passenger list of a machine that Deirdre allegedly took to Hawaii and Diane's diary got him on the right track. Deirdre was killed in the kidnapping of the two twin sisters and only exists in the schizophrenic psychosis from which Diane has suffered ever since. The person who passed Magnum off as Deirdre was none other than Diane. When Magnum tries to confront Diane with his findings, a dramatic showdown ensues in which Diane holds the barrel of a pistol to herself.
Notes: In addition to Sharon Stone as Diane / Deirdre, John Hillerman also plays a dual role in this episode. In order to break the marriage with Lady Ashley, Higgins appears as his Irish half-brother, as the alcoholic Catholic priest Father Paddy McGuiness. (see episode 3.23, Faith And Begorrah )

87 3 A dead man returns Mac's Back Oct 11, 1984 Aug 20, 1985
After Diana's death, Magnum plunged into a personal crisis and couldn't get rid of memories of people who meant a lot to him and who died an unnatural death. One day when he saw a man at an intersection in Honolulu who was Lt. Mac Reynolds, his naval friend who was killed in a bomb attack on January 3, looks strikingly similar, not only do his friends Rick, Higgins and TC think he is crazy, but also his family doctor, Doc Ibold, who in the face of Magnum's condition suggests admission to psychiatry. Knowing that no one will believe him and knowing that he is not crazy, Magnum goes looking for the man to show him off to his friends. Indeed, he succeeds in his search, but becomes entangled in an opaque espionage story.
Notes: The producers to Donald P. Bellisario inserted by means of the idea of a double of the figure of the Lt. Mac Reynolds rejoined the series in a creative way after his two seasons absence. Reynolds' cast member Jeff MacKay, meanwhile, starred in the flopped series The Sky Dogs of Boragora , which was discontinued after just one season. The title music can be heard in a slight variation in the credits.

TC is assigned to bring a suitcase from Maui to Oahu in his helicopter. During a stopover, the helicopter is shot down and falls into the sea. TC is saved, but is in a deep coma in the hospital. Then his alleged brother Gerald appears and supposedly supports Magnum, Rick and Higgins in finding the cause of the crash; In truth, however, he only wants to find the suitcase with the highly explosive contents. When he attacks Magnum underwater and Higgins has a serious accident after a shooting attack on his car, it becomes clear that a murderous plan was being pursued by a criminal organization.

106 22nd Behind bars A Pretty Good Dancing Chicken Apr 4, 1985 Apr 10, 1990
Becky Damon and her criminal friend Darryl get involved in illegal arms deals rather naively. But the handover ends in a fiasco and with a badly injured Becky. While Darryl is arrested, Becky remains missing and is believed to be dead. Her father Jack refuses to admit this and so he hires Magnum to take on the case. But in order to be able to get usable information, Magnum has to go to prison himself under a pretext. However, this project turns out to be far more dangerous than everyone involved expected, as a felon convicted by Magnum's help suddenly appears and violently attacks the private investigator. With Jack Damon too eager to obstruct Magnum's work, the situation becomes increasingly dire.
Notes: The idea, often taken up in film history, of smuggling an innocent undercover into prison for investigative purposes, is expanded here by an additional punchline, in which a third person lets the camouflage open, but in the end it enables the decisive breakout.

109 3 The day of the dolphin Old Acquaintance Oct 3, 1985 6th Mar 1990
Magnum's friend Goldie Morris was a political activist even in college, and today, many years after they last met, she has lost none of her fighting spirit. She unintentionally slides along with Magnum, Higgins, TC and Rick in a spectacular attempted assassination attempt on a dictator in which a dolphin plays an important role. Only after Magnum has put all the pieces of the puzzle together does a clearer picture emerge. But there are still many obstacles to overcome before the attack can be thwarted.
Notes: Goldie Morris' shoelaces that are constantly open ensure a successful running gag and lead Magnum in his typical off-commentaries to sometimes philosophical comments.

111 5 The hotel snoop The Hotel Dick Oct 17, 1985 20 Mar 1990
Magnum has given up his "persistent attempt to lead a life of pleasure" and swapped the property's guest house for a windowless office in the Hawaiian Gardens Hotel. There he works as a permanent hotel detective, where he is essentially responsible for arresting "the cat" who is responsible for a whole series of thefts in the hotel and who has so far been able to shake off her pursuers thanks to his speed and agility also Magnum. The managing director of the Hawaiian Gardens, Mr. Clyde Daltrey expects a quick exposure of "the cat" from Magnum, as the seventh international meeting of the jewelery designers with a high-quality jewelery exhibition in the hotel is about to take place. Magnum also has to protect the prostitute Lesley, who involuntarily snatched confidential information from one of her clients, the criminal Willard X. Huxley, and is now being hunted by him. As it turns out in the course of Magnum's investigation, there is a connection between the manager Mr. Daltrey, Willard X. Huxley and the jewelery exhibition.
Notes: This episode has a playful gag that has absolutely nothing to do with the plot and is embedded in the background scene, but is emphasized by appearing twice. In each case, a stocky older man puts a grandiose belly clap in the swimming pool. The original sound of the immediately following scene of the main plot is already faded in and serves as a comment on the belly smack. The second time, besides the belly smack, the gag as such is also commented on, with Higgins remarking that this is grotesque and Rick adds that it makes no sense at all.

113 7th Homecoming Going home Oct 31, 1985 Aug 14, 1990
Notes: In the first scene of the episode, the Magnum family poses in front of a 1955 Chevrolet in an old movie. Since Magnum's father was killed in Korea on July 4th, that is by July 4th, 1953 at the latest, but more likely on July 4th, 1952, Magnum's father should have been dead by the time of the film. The fact that this inaccuracy in the selection of props occurred may have something to do with the fact that the 1955 Chevrolet was (and is) considered to be the automobile of the 1950s in popular US perception.
