The 1932/33 NHL season was the 16th season in the National Hockey League . Nine teams played 48 games each. The Stanley Cup won the New York Rangers after a 3-1 win in the final series against the Toronto Maple Leafs . The Ottawa Senators returned, but Detroit's coffers were empty too. The Falcons were sold to James E. Norris , a Chicago grain millionaire and former Stanley Cup winner with the Montreal AAA. He wanted to give the team a name that matched Motor City and chose Detroit Red Wings . In the play-offs, the Maple Leafs and Bruins went over the pain limits. Only after 104:46 in the sixth overtime did Toronto's Ken Doraty release the players and fans at 1:50 am. For the first time this season there was the rookie award, which Detroit's Carl Voss won.
