The 1959/60 NHL season was the 43rd season in the National Hockey League . Six teams played 70 games each. The Montreal Canadiens won the Stanley Cup for the fifth time in a row after beating the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-0 in the final series. From 1951 to 1960 Montreal was in the final without a break. One day after Halloween, New York's Andy Bathgate hit Montreal's goalie Jacques Plante with a shot in the face. Plante returns with a fiberglass mask and saves 29 of 30 shots on goal. This revolutionized the goalkeeping game, as it was previously not common to play with a mask.
