2008 Summer Olympics / Canoe
At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , 16 decisions were made in canoeing , twelve for men and four for women. These 16 decisions included four in canoe slalom , including one for women, and twelve in canoe racing , including three for women.
All competitions were held in the newly built rowing and canoeing park Shunyi .
qualification
Each NOK was allowed to send one boat to the start per competition, provided they secured a quota place in various qualifying competitions. The main qualification competitions were the 2007 World Championships in Duisburg (flat water) and Foz do Iguaçu (canoe slalom). In addition, there were various continental precipitations in spring 2008.
Canoe racing
As the host nation, China had a place in the single competitions. If a Chinese boat had not qualified directly via the global or the Asian elimination, it would take the place of the last qualified boat in the world championships.

Canoe slalom
The best 15 in a single kayak (women and men), 10 in a single canoe (men) and 6 in a two-person canoe (men) at the World Championships in Foz do Iguaçu from September 19 to 23, 2007 qualified for Beijing. In addition, there were two further starting places for Europe and one for all other continents in all disciplines, which were awarded in the event of eliminations in late 2007 and early 2008. As the host, China had a starting place in every competition. If no Chinese boat qualifies for Beijing via the World Championships or the Asian elimination, it will take the place of the last qualified boat in the World Championships.

Of the 21 participants, fifteen qualified for the semi-finals and ten for the final. The Swiss Michael Kurt had to retire early because he was only 17th in the two preliminary races. After the first run only in 20th place, the Togolese Benjamin Boukpeti was able to qualify for the semifinals with a good second run and caused a surprise there with his best time. Both the German Alexander Grimm and the Austrian Helmut Oblinger managed to place in the top 10 in the semi-finals and thus qualify for the final. Grimm, who started fourth from last because of his fourth place in the semifinals, was initially able to undercut the fastest time of the previously leader. Then the French Fabien Lefèvre , the Australian Warwick Draper and the Togolese Boukpeti failed because of Grimm's time, so that Grimm won the first gold medal at this Olympic Games for the German team. Lefèvre came in second, Benjamin Boukpeti reached third place and thus won the first ever medal at the Olympics for Togo. The Austrian Helmut Oblinger came in seventh.

The Slovak Michal Martikán continued his streak of success at the Olympic Games. After gold in 1996 and two silver medals in 2000 and 2004, he again prevailed on the difficult route in Shunyi . Despite two penalty seconds each, he was the fastest in the semifinals and finals. With just one touch of a goal, the Briton David Florence finished second. The Australian Robin Bell drove from fifth place in the semifinals to bronze . Two of the favorites, Frenchman Tony Estanguet , gold medalist from Sydney and Athens , and German Jan Benzien , reigning runner-up world and European champion, failed in the semifinals. Estanguet finished ninth, while the runner-up Benzien lost considerable speed after a risky maneuver in a water roller and in the end missed the final by three seconds. An Austrian canoe driver was not at the start.

For the third time in a row, the Slovak twin brothers Pavol and Peter Hochschorner achieved Olympic victory in the Canadian two-man. After the heats, the two were in the front. The German duo Felix Michel and Sebastian Piersig were also among the top 10 and qualified for the semi-finals . The only African and American teams from South Africa and the United States had to leave. In the semifinals, Michel and Piersig relegated the Slovaks to second place by touching the goal and thus taking two penalty seconds and taking the lead themselves. In the final, the six remaining teams started in the reverse order of the semifinals. After the times of the Italians, the French and the Russians Michail Kuznetsov and Dmitri Larionov had been undercut by the Czechs Jaroslav Volf and Ondřej Štěpánek , it was clear that they would at least have the bronze medal. The next starting favorites from Slovakia were able to increase this time again and since the leading Germans Michel and Piersig fell back to the last and sixth place in the final due to several mistakes, after they had capsized and lost almost 15 seconds to the Hochschorners, it was clear that Slovakia won the second gold medal in these games.

After the semifinals in fourth place, Jacqueline Lawrence moved up to the silver rank in front of the Austrian Violetta Oblinger-Peters , who even drove from seventh place after the semifinals to bronze. In a promising second place after the semi-finals, the French Émilie Fer missed a goal and fell back to seventh place. The German Jennifer Bongardt , who was still world and European champion in 2007, was eliminated in fourth of the preliminary rounds in the semifinals after missing two goals and finishing the competition in fifteenth.
