final

August 13, 2016, 10:37 pm
All three Jamaicans and two Americans qualified for the final. There was also one starter from Ivory Coast, one from the Netherlands and one from Trinidad and Tobago.

At the major championships in recent years, there was always only one winner, Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. She was successful at the 2012 Olympic Games and the 2013 and 2015 World Championships . So she was the favorite here too. But already in the semifinals it had been shown that there were strong competitors. Her compatriot Elaine Thompson was as fast as Fraser-Pryce as the winner of the third semifinals with 10.88 seconds. In the first semi-final, the Americans Tori Bowie and Michelle-Lee Ahye from Trinidad and Tobago had also achieved strong times with 10.90 seconds. The double European champion from 2014 and 2016, Dafne Schippers from the Netherlands, ran just as quickly in the second semifinal race.

Fraser-Pryce, Thompson, and Bowie came from the blocks best. Around halfway through the course, however, Thompson was clearly in front of Bowie and Fraser-Pryce. This is how it went to the finish line, whereby Fraser-Pryce and the Ivorian Marie Josée Ta Lou had to evaluate the finish photo to determine the bronze medalist. It turned out that Fraser-Pryce was just able to save third place. Schippers finished fifth ahead of Ahye. The American English Gardner came in seventh ahead of Christania Williams from Jamaica.

This final was of a high standard. The winning time of 10.71 s was absolutely top notch, the first seven of the race undercut the 11-second mark.

Elaine Thompson won Jamaica's third consecutive gold medal in the discipline.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is now the most successful sprinter over 100 meters with her bronze medal . She replaces her compatriot Merlene Ottey , who had also won three medals. In addition to the bronze medal won here, Fraser-Pryce has two Olympic victories ( 2008 and 2012 ) on her account, while Ottey won a silver medal ( 1996 ) and two bronze medals ( 1984 and 2000 ).
