The Groupama Stadium (also known as Parc OL ) is the third largest football stadium in France and was built in Décines-Charpieu , a municipality neighboring the city of Lyon , in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region , from 2013 to 2015.
history
The inauguration took place on January 9, 2016. The venue is the only Ligue 1 club's own stadium . It is mainly used by the football club Olympique Lyon , which is also the owner through its OL land . It offers seats for 59,286 spectators. It replaces the Stade Gerland as the home of the OL. The venue was one of ten venues for the 2016 European Football Championship and as such is also intended for the 2019 Women's World Cup .
After numerous legal objections to the new building, the foundation stone could not be laid until mid-November 2013. Despite the delay in the start of construction, the sports facility was completed in time for the 2016 European Championship.
On January 9, 2016, the Parc Olympique Lyonnais was officially opened with the league match between Olympique Lyon and ES Troyes AC in front of 55,169 visitors. The American rapper will.i.am performed before the game . The home side won 4-1 and OL's Alexandre Lacazette scored the first goal at the new stadium.
In addition to the football stadium, the Parc Olympique Lyonnais also offers space for a leisure center, two hotels and offices. The question of whether the public sector or private investors should assume the costs of the new building has not yet been clarified.
On July 12, 2017, Groupama , an insurance group based in Paris , became the name sponsor of the OL venue. The contract has a term of three years and should bring the association around five to seven million euros annually.
