Võru ( German  Werro , Russian Выру ) is a town in Võru County in southeast Estonia with about 12,000 inhabitants. The city is both the economic and administrative center of the Võru County, which has over 33,000 inhabitants. The South Estonian dialect ( Võru language ) is widely spoken in Võru .

history

Võru was founded on August 21, 1784, when the Governor General of Riga signed a decree establishing the new city and determining the city's name. In 1785 city planning was completed. Right angles dominate the historical street network, which like some one-story wooden houses has been preserved to this day.

Estonia Memorial

The memorial to the 17 inhabitants of the city who perished in the sinking of the Estonia ferry in 1994 is located in the Seminari väljak green area next to the Katharinenkirche ( Katariina kirik ). The sculpture shows a sharply inclined black granite block that "sinks" into the ground. Two joined " praying hands " protrude from the granite block (based on a motif by Albrecht Dürer ). Next to the sculpture is a slender white cross. The memorial was completed in 1996 by the sculptor Mati Karmin and names the 17 dead.

economy

The city was and is a geographically favorable transhipment point for trade with Russia and Latvia .
