Wax flowers ( Hoya ), also known as porcelain flowers, are a genus in the subfamily of the silk plants (Asclepiadoideae) within the family of the dog poison plants (Apocynaceae). A number of species and their varieties are used as ornamental plants .

The German name wax flowers is also used for the unrelated genus Cerinthe from the family of the Raublattgewächse (Boraginaceae).

Vegetative characteristics

Hoya species usually grow epiphytically , lithophytically and only rarely terrestrially. They are perennial herbaceous or slightly woody plants, lianas or sometimes subshrubs . The shoot axes are hanging to looping, climbing with adventitious roots or independently upright. The shoot axes are at most sparsely hairy; in old age, lenticels are often clearly visible. They contain white milky juice . The roots are fibrous, and the shoot axes also form shoot-born roots. They are mostly evergreen; Hoya spartioides is deciduous.

The leaves are, with one exception ( Hoya imbricata always positioned against the time). The leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The simple, flat leaf blade is dorsiventral, fleshy, leathery, succulent, membranous, paper-like or with a wax layer, one or two colored and entire. The leaves often have silver spots and an extra-floral nectarium at the base . In some species the leaves are hairy. The leaf veins are mostly almost parallel, rarely pinnate; mostly without lateral nerves.

Inflorescences and flowers

In the internodes stand individually, on more or less long inflorescence shafts, which often take on photosynthetic tasks, or without inflorescence shafts, simple doldy or racemose, or branched shaindold-like inflorescences , which often contain many flowers.

The flowers smell sweet to heavy or are odorless. The stalked, hermaphrodite, radial symmetry flowers are fünfzählig double perianth (perianth). The five sepals are fused. The five petals are fused to half to almost their entire length ( Hoya inflata , Hoya manipurensis ) in the shape of a star, wheel, bell, urn ( Hoya manipurensis ) or plate-like shape and can be fleshy and / or have a layer of wax. The colors of the petals range from white to cream to yellow and brown and from pink to reddish. The outside of the petals is usually hairless; at Hoya manipurensis are trichomes present. The inside of the petals is sometimes hairy upright; in Hoya inflata it is papilous . There is only one circle with five fertile, identical stamens . The stamens have appendages and are partly fused together to form a staminal tube; the free part of five expanded, fleshy secondary crown lobes and the fused part form the secondary crown. The colors of the secondary crown range from white to ivory to yellow and green or pink. In Hoya multiflora straight spurs are formed. The anthers form a gynostegium with the scars . The upright pollinia end in a sterile area. The two carpels are a top permanent, zweifächerigen ovary fused with 30 to 50 ovules . The two styles are fused in the upper area and end in a common conical to egg-shaped scar. As with all other genera of the Asclepiadoideae subfamily , they have a complicated pollination mechanism (pinch trap flowers).

Fruits and seeds

The mostly single (not in pairs as in many genera of this subfamily) hanging follicles are hairless, relatively thin and elongated, pencil-shaped, spindle-shaped (for example in Hoya coriacea , Hoya griffithii ) or ellipsoidal (in Hoya coronaria and species closely related to it), always without edges, usually 4 to 10 (more rarely, for example with Hoya longifolia up to 30 centimeters) long, have a thin, often woody or thick (with Hoya coronaria and species closely related to it) pericarp and contain many seeds. The egg-shaped to elongated, 1 to 5 mm long and 1 to 2.5 mm wide seeds, which only have a wing and a 2 to 3 cm long tuft of hair as a flight organ at the end, are released as diaspores ; it is spread by wind.

Chromosome numbers

The species examined so far have chromosome numbers of 2n = 22.

Occurrence

The genus Hoya has a wide natural range in Asia, Australia and Oceania. It stretches from the Indian subcontinent to the Fiji Islands and Samoa . They come from southern China (32 species) via Myanmar , Nepal , Thailand (40 species) to Vietnam and from Indonesia via Malaysia , New Guinea , the Philippines (68 species) to Japan and from northern Australia to New Caledonia . They thrive up to altitudes of around 2500 meters. The habitats in Southeast Asia are the always humid, tropical rainforest, in northern Australia and northeastern Thailand the dry forest and the cloud forest in the mountains. For example, they thrive in coastal areas, a variety of forest types, often near running water, on rocks and on trees.

Many species are threatened in their natural occurrence through logging and the resulting islanding of habitats.

Systematics

The generic name Hoya was first published in 1810 by Robert Brown in Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae , p. 459 . The type is Hoya carnosa (L.) R.Br., which was first published as Asclepias carnosa L. The botanical genus name Hoya honors the English gardener Thomas Hoy (approx. 1750 - 1822). The valid generic name Hoya R.Br. there is a large number of synonyms : Absolmsia Kuntze , Astrostemma Benth. , non Asterostemma Decne. , Acanthostemma ( flower ) flower , Antiostelma ( Tsiang & PTLi ) PTLi , Centrostemma Decne. , Cyrtoceras Bennet , Cystidianthus Hassk. , Madangia P.I. Forest . , DJLiddle & IMLiddle , Micholitzia N.E.Br. , Otostemma flower , Physostelma Wight, Plocostemma flower , Pterostelma Wight , Schollia Jacq. , Sperlingia Vahl , Tripless Sperm G.Don. The genus Hoya belongs to the tribe Marsdenieae in the subfamily Asclepiadoideae within the family Apocynaceae .

More than 600 Hoya species names have been published, of which more than 300 species are considered valid taxa in the more recent scientific literature (from around 2000) (Wanntorp et al., 2014). The genus Hoya has been edited several times in the past, but so far there has been no monographic treatment of the genus Hoya . In the last few years the phylogeny of the genus has been investigated at the “Department of Phanerogamic Botany” of the “Naturhistoriska riksmuseet” (Stockholm) with the help of molecular genetic analyzes (Livia Wanntorp and colleagues).

Some Hoya varieties are grown as house plants. Hoya carnosa is probably the best known houseplant of this genus. Many species have hanging to twisting stems. An example of an upright growing species is Hoya multiflora . Varieties with variegated white (variegated) leaves were selected from some species . Examples: Hoya carnosa cv. 'Tricolor' and Hoya bella cv. 'Tricolor' and Hoya macrophylla cv. 'Variegata'.

The Hoya species and varieties are propagated with cuttings or rarely with seeds.
