The 1st Lig 1972/73 was the 15th season of the top Turkish league in men's football . It began on September 9, 1972 with the game Galatasaray Istanbul against PTT , which went 3-0 and ended on May 27, 1973. From December 31, 1972 to February 3, 1973 the season was interrupted by the winter break.

Galatasaray Istanbul became the master . It was the third title in a row and the sixth in the club's history. With this championship, Galatasaray was the first team to win the Turkish championship three times in a row. At that time the club was Turkish record champions together with Fenerbahçe Istanbul . Fenerbahçe Istanbul was runner-up, and with Şekerspor and PTT , the newcomers of the season were relegated to the second division again. Beşiktaş Istanbul scored only two goals away from home, but got ten points in their 15 visits.

The champions of the last second division season Ankara Şekerspor and PTT SK were added to the remaining 14 clubs from the previous season . While PTT achieved direct promotion with the second division championship, Şekerspor returned to the first league after four years of abstinence.
