10 second mark
The 10-second mark is a term that is mainly used in athletics and describes the physical and psychological threshold for mastering the 100-meter run for men in less than ten seconds.
Undershooting ten seconds has long been considered a hallmark of great runners, but has lost importance since the late 1990s as more and more sprinters hit it.
history
The first 100-meter runs under ten seconds were still measured by hand with stopwatches . The International Association of Athletics Federations states, however, that a measurement is only recognized if the time measurement is fully automatic, no wind speeds of over 2.0 m / s prevail and no performance-enhancing means have been used. Even errors in determining the wind can make a sprint measurement invalid.
Under these conditions, it was the American Jim Hines who was the first to break the 10-second mark on October 14, 1968. He won the 100-meter sprint at the 1968 Olympic Games with 9.95 s, setting a new world record . It then took almost nine years before the threshold was broken again. Silvio Leonard crossed the finish line on August 11, 1977 after 9.98 seconds. These times were both set up at a high altitude, which promoted good results due to the lower air resistance. Carl Lewis was the first runner to complete the low sea level performance when it took just 9.97 s on May 14, 1983. Calvin Smith was the first runner to break the 10-second mark twice when he reached 9.93 s on July 3, 1983 and undercut ten seconds again in August of the same year.
In the 1980s , the mark was undercut by a number of runners, with the 100-meter final at the 1991 World Championships being a new highlight of the competition. Six athletes ran under ten seconds in the same race, and Carl Lewis set a new world record with 9.86 s. In the meantime, the mark has been broken by all six Continental Athletic Associations except South America , where the Brazilian Robson da Silva currently holds the record with exactly ten seconds.
On May 30, 2015, Chinese sprinter Su Bingtian broke the 10.00-second barrier as the first Asian-born athlete. With an officially valid time of 9.99 seconds, he was third in the Diamond League in Eugene behind Tyson Gay with 9.88 seconds and Mike Rodgers with 9.90 seconds.
Electronically measured times under 10 seconds
The following table primarily describes when and with what performance a runner stayed below the 10-second mark for the first time. His personal best time, which is sometimes significantly better, is entered in the PB column .
