The Autostrada A50 ( Italian for 'Autobahn A50'), also known as Tangenziale Ovest di Milano ( western bypass of Milan) , is the western bypass of Milan . It is 31.5 km long and toll-free . A toll only has to be paid in the northern part to use the A8 .
Together with the A51 and A52 , it forms the 74.4 km long Milan ring motorway , which is one of the largest rings in the Italian road system.
history
Work on the A50 began in 1965 and lasted a total of three years. Originally it had four lanes with hard shoulder, but was expanded to six lanes in the 1980s. To this day, the purpose of the motorway is to connect the motorways leading to Milan directly in order to avoid congestion in inner-city traffic. The operating company wanted to connect Europe directly with the industrial areas of Liguria and the Mezzogiorno in this way .
course
The A50 branches off the A8 towards the south near Rho and passes Milan to the west. Over the next 31 kilometers, the A4 ( Turin - Trieste ) and the A7 (Milan - Genoa ) cross two extremely important traffic axes in northern Italy , until it finally joins the A1 to Naples at San Giuliano Milanese .
The twelve junctions also lead to the state highways SS 33 and SS 494 and the former state highways SS 11 , SS 35 and SS 412 .
The maximum permissible speed is 90 km / h on the entire route.
The tangent today
Meanwhile, the A50 is no longer reserved exclusively for long-distance traffic, but is also used regularly by the Milanese population to reach destinations at the other end of the city, as the inner-city roads are often congested. The road is used by almost 250,000 road users every day.
