Old Prussian Infantry Regiment No. 2 (1806)
The Old Prussian Infantry Regiment No. 2 was a regiment on foot that had existed under different names in the Brandenburg and Prussian armies since the 17th century . After the devastating defeat of Jena and Auerstedt which was Prussian Army of Scharnhorst from scratch placed scratch. He found the No. 2 still largely intact and incorporated it into the new Prussian army . It was initially called 1st Infantry Regiment (1st East Prussian) and finally Grenadier Regiment Kronprinz (1st East Prussian) No. 1.
history
The regiment was set up by Bogislaw von Schwerin in Pomerania and Neumark according to the order of Elector Friedrich Wilhelm on December 20, 1655 and was first used in the Battle of Warsaw . The regiment's quarters were in East Prussia in 1657 ( Rastenburg and Gerdauen ). The unit fought for the Electorate of Brandenburg in the war against the French and Swedes . As part of the Imperial Army , the association fought near Zenta in 1697 and took part as the Prussian Army Association in the War of the Spanish and Polish Succession , the First and Second Silesian Wars and the Seven Years' War .
During the participation in the coalition wars , the association was renamed the 1st East Prussian Infantry Regiment . After the fights of the coalition wars (among other things as part of the Grande Armée ) the regiment was moved to Danzig in 1849 and to Königsberg in 1855 to the Kronprinz defense barracks (where it remained). In 1866 it took part in the war against Austria , in 1870/71 against France . In memory of the former chief, the regiment was named Grenadier Regiment "King Friedrich III." (1st East Prussian) No. 1 on June 21, 1888. On May 6, 1900, it was given the old nickname "Crown Prince" again the association had led since April 22, 1864. Wilhelm II wrote in his order:
“I want the Grenadier Regiment King Friedrich III. (1. Ostpr.) No. 1 on that day, on which I placed my son, the Crown Prince Imperial and Royal Highness, à la suite of the regiment, the name used with distinction in the wars of 1866 and 1870/71 " Grenadier Regiment Kronprinz (1. Ostpr.) No. 1 ”again. At the same time I determine that the regiment 1. on the helmets the guard eagle without a star 2. on the collar and sleeve plates a. the officers the embroidery which he wore in earlier times as a regiment of Kaniz. b. the crew puts on white strands. I have the confident trust in the regiment that from this evidence of my special royal grace it will find a renewed incentive to serve me, my house and the fatherland into the distant future with the same loyalty and devotion that it has now has confirmed almost 250 years of existence on all occasions. "
On May 6, 1904, Crown Prince Wilhelm of Prussia was placed à la suite of the regiment after he had turned 18.
For the battles of the First World War, see the 1st Division , to which the regiment was also assigned. After the end of the war, the regiment was demobilized in Königsberg on December 4, 1918 and finally disbanded on June 1, 1919.
The tradition continued in the Reichswehr with the 9th and 12th companies of the 9th (Prussian) Infantry Regiment . With the formation of the Wehrmacht in March 1935, the tradition was continued in the aforementioned companies of the now called 9th Infantry Regiment.
