The Cupa României was played for the 71st time in the 2008/09 season. The official name of the competition was "Cupa României Timișoreana ". In the final, which was played in the Tudor Vladimirescu stadium in Târgu Jiu , CFR Cluj won 3-0 against FC Timișoara and was able to win the cup for the second time. As a result, Cluj qualified for the Europa League .

In the first round 140 teams competed against each other: the 42 relay winners of League IV and 98 of 108 clubs from League III . In the second round 40 games took place, in which the 70 first round winners and the remaining 10 third division teams took part. In the third round, the 40 second-round winners played against each other. In the 4th round, the 36 teams from League II were added to the 20 third-round winners . The 28 four-round winners met in the 5th round. The 18 clubs in League 1 took part in the cup together with the 14 five-round winners from the sixteenth finals. Only one game was played at a time. If this was a draw after 90 minutes, an extension of 30 minutes followed. If after that there was still no decision, the decision was made on penalties . A total of 204 clubs took part.
